U.23 Vietnam waiting for group draw
At the 2025 Southeast Asian U.23 tournament held last month, U.23 Singapore did not participate. The 10 teams that appeared at the tournament in July included host Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Timor Leste and U.23 Vietnam. At the 33rd SEA Games in December, the above teams will continue to participate in the Southeast Asian Games . The group structure will likely be similar. The 10 teams are divided into 3 groups, 1 group has 4 teams, 2 groups have 3 teams.

This grouping may give an advantage to the Vietnamese football representative, thanks to the fewer group stage matches, the players will not be exhausted if they reach the knockout stages. This situation has happened in previous SEA Games.
Former VFF Vice President Duong Vu Lam commented on the way to divide the groups into smaller groups like the recent U.23 Southeast Asian tournament, which will likely be reapplied at the 33rd SEA Games: "Dividing the groups into smaller groups, instead of dividing into 2 groups like the previous SEA Games, into 3 groups like the host country Thailand is preparing to apply, will first help the players save energy. Second, the group stage will reduce the number of matches that are too unequal, such as the teams of Vietnam, Thailand, or Indonesia being in the same group with too many weak teams like Timor Leste, Brunei, Laos...
As for the fact that U.23 Singapore did not participate in the 33rd SEA Games, in my opinion, it does not affect the expertise of U.23 Vietnam. Even after the Lion Island team withdrew, the opportunity for U.23 Vietnam to fall into a group of 3 teams is even greater, helping us not to fall into a situation of physical exhaustion. This is the advantage that Vietnamese football experienced at the recent U.23 Southeast Asian tournament."
U.23 Singapore is not the main opponent of U.23 Vietnam.
In terms of expertise, in recent years, Singaporean football representatives are no longer worthy opponents of Vietnamese football in Southeast Asian tournaments. Therefore, U.23 Singapore is not the main opponent of U.23 Vietnam at the SEA Games in Thailand this December.
The chance of U.23 Vietnam winning the gold medal is still very high.

Therefore, the absence of U.23 Singapore at this year's Southeast Asian Games does not greatly affect the goal of reaching the final of U.23 Vietnam. Former Vice President of VFF Duong Vu Lam commented: "The main opponents of U.23 Vietnam at SEA Games 33 will be host Thailand and Indonesia. Even U.23 Malaysia is not strong, and U.23 Singapore in recent years has had little chance of competing for medals. Therefore, the absence of this team at SEA Games 33 does not actually affect the journey to conquer a high position of the team under coach Kim Sang-sik."
