Martyr, Doctor Dang Thuy Tram was born in 1942, grew up in an intellectual family in Hanoi . At the end of 1966, young doctor Dang Thuy Tram volunteered to work in battlefield B. After 3 months of marching from North to South, in March 1967, she arrived in Quang Ngai, was assigned to be in charge of an infirmary in Duc Pho, mainly treating wounded soldiers. On June 22, 1970, during a working trip from the Ba To mountains to the plains, Doctor Dang Thuy Tram was ambushed by the enemy and sacrificed at the age of 28, 2 years in the Party and 3 years in the profession.

Among the legacies left by Dr. Dang Thuy Tram are two diaries written from April 1968 to June 20, 1970. These two diaries were kept by Frederic Whitehurst, a former US military intelligence officer, for 35 years and returned to his family at the end of April 2005. After being published as a book, the diary attracted special attention both at home and abroad. The example of martyr, Dr. Dang Thuy Tram strongly touched millions of hearts. She represented the generation of young Vietnamese during wartime, ready to sacrifice for the cause of protecting the nation, for the revolutionary ideal, dedicating her youth to the Fatherland.
In 2006, martyr and doctor Dang Thuy Tram was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces. Her diary has inspired many famous cultural and artistic works. Her name is given to many streets and public works across the country such as hospitals, schools... In Can Tho City, there are many streets named after Dang Thuy Tram in Binh Thuy Ward, Vi Thanh Ward... After the merger, Quang Ngai Province has a new commune named Dang Thuy Tram. |
With “Dang Thuy Tram and the Third Diary”, this is the unpublished posthumous work of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram, compiled by author Dang Kim Tram, the martyr’s younger sister, and published by Vietnam Women’s Publishing House. The third diary has many pages written before the female doctor went to the battlefield. The book is 384 pages thick, consisting of 2 parts: “The Ideal Class” and “The Bridge Over the Divided River”, along with an introduction to some letters with family and friends of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram; memoirs of Ms. Doan Ngoc Tram - Dr. Dang Thuy Tram’s mother; articles by author Dang Kim Tram and the female doctor’s younger siblings. Through the book, readers will understand more about the childhood, family, thoughts and ambitions of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram when she was still in school.
Her ideal, when she was only in her twenties, was so beautiful: “Studying the history of the Party, the Party guided us through the abyss during the 9 years of long resistance. Despite the difficulties, we still won, let alone today our people have grown up like Phu Dong Thien Vuong, with a whole world supporting us wholeheartedly, we will definitely win. That belief is like life”. When registering to volunteer for battlefield B, she promised: “Dear mother, on the day of victory, I will return, I will live forever with my family - I will regain the happy days and will be happy enough to make up for the days of separation”. In the book, author Dang Kim Tram shared: “I think the most precious thing about my sister is love. There are many people who are braver and more arduous than my sister. But what she brings to everyone is her heart full of love for everyone”.
The love story of Doctor Dang Thuy Tram and soldier M. once attracted much attention. In this book, that love story is told through many different perspectives, very real and very real. It is a pure, beautiful love story of young people in wartime, always knowing how to put their responsibility to the Fatherland and homeland above all else.
