A consortium of 12 Latin American countries is collaborating to develop Latam GPT – the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) language model that is deeply trained on the region’s cultural, historical and linguistic specificities.
The first version of this artificial intelligence model, led by the Chilean National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA), with the participation of more than 30 academic and technology organizations in the region, is expected to be launched in September this year, promising to change the technological landscape of the entire region.
The fundamental difference between Latam GPT and current popular AI models lies in its development philosophy: Instead of depending on English data sources from North America or Europe, this model is "nourished" by the diverse knowledge heritage of the Latin American region.
Chilean Science Minister Aisén Etcheverry hopes that Latam GPT will not only be a simple technological product but will also carry the mission of preserving and promoting Latin American cultural identity in the digital age.
According to Ms. Etcheverry, one of the most impressive achievements is the successful integration of two indigenous languages, Rapa Nui of Easter Island and Mapudungun of the Mapuche people, into the Latam GPT, paving the way for the preservation of dozens of other indigenous languages that are at risk of disappearing.
Unlike large technology corporations with billion-dollar budgets, the Latam GPT development team had to "knock on every door" to collect unique data sources.
As a result, 17.5 terabytes of information, including never-before-digitized historical documents, local literary works and indigenous knowledge, were incorporated into the system.
This data, which cannot be found on the Internet, is stored at the supercomputer center of the University of Tarapacá (Chile), becoming the region's first digital knowledge repository.
Technically, Latam GPT is built on the Llama 3 platform with 70 billion parameters, acting as an “open brain” that allows local developers to create their own applications without depending on foreign technology.
This is where the key innovation comes in: Rather than competing directly with ChatGPT or Gemini, the project focuses on providing a platform for schools, hospitals, and local governments to develop AI solutions tailored to their specific needs.
The first tests are currently being rolled out in several Chilean cities, ranging from public service systems to personalizededucation programs.
The Latin American Development Bank (CAF) and cloud computing service Amazon Web Services (AWS) have pledged resources to expand the project.
CENIA director Álvaro Soto said the project's biggest challenge was limited financial resources compared to global tech giants.
However, he stressed that the development of Latam GPT is an important step for the region to move beyond being a mere “technology consumer” and towards digital sovereignty in the AI era./.
