South Korean opposition leader stabbed in the neck during visit to Busan

On January 2, South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was attacked during a visit to the southeastern port city of Busan.

Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the opposition Democratic Party (DP), was stabbed in the left side of the neck during an interview with reporters after touring the construction site of a new airport on Busan's Gadeok Island.

The attacker was arrested at the scene.

Previously, on September 18, Mr. Lee Jae-myung had to be hospitalized due to exhaustion from a prolonged hunger strike.

According to DP leaders, Lee Jae-myung has been on a hunger strike for 19 days and it is unclear whether he plans to extend it further.

The ruling People's Power Party (PPP) expressed regret over the incident and wished Lee Jae-myung a speedy recovery, urging him to return to the National Assembly to focus on people's livelihood issues.

Opposition leaders began fasting on August 31 to protest the government of President Yoon Suk Yeol. Lee Jae-myung's move comes amid an investigation into corruption allegations.

Prosecutors have requested an arrest warrant for Lee Jae-myung on charges of bribery, breach of trust and other charges related to a real estate development scandal when he was mayor of Seongnam City.
