The group "Thanh Am Xanh" is one of the artist groups with the aspiration to use music to inspire and call for action to protect the environment.
When music becomes an environmental messenger
Sharing the reason for its establishment, artist Phan Thuy - Music Director, Group Leader said: "Thanh Am Xanh" wants to use music to spread messages about nature, people and ecosystems. The love for traditional musical instruments has brought us together and we believe that music can become a bridge, so that people can feel the familiarity of nature and from there act for a green future".
With the slogan “Music leads the way to the green forest”, the group has chosen a different path: Each program is not only for enjoyment, but also a call to action, accompanying the campaign “For 1 million Vietnamese bamboo trees”.
The special thing is that the musical instruments of “Thanh Am Xanh” are all made from bamboo with clear, rustic sounds that evoke the breath of the mountains and forests, and evoke memories of the countryside. Artist Khanh Chung, a member of the group, shared: “Music from bamboo, a familiar tree to Vietnamese people, is the closest medium that we want to bring to the community. It is also closely linked to the project’s message of calling for bamboo planting. We hope to accompany them for a long time and call on more artists to spread this spirit.”
“Thanh Am Xanh” also made its mark with its diverse performance style. From works with folk and regional influences to symphonic ensembles and electronic music. Works such as “Tay Nguyen Suite”, “Mua rung”, “Nguoi sow green seeds” or “Khi rung tre biet hat”… not only demonstrate the group’s creative exploration, but also contain a strong message about love for the environment, love for people and above all, love for Vietnamese culture.
Spread the green seed journey
Not stopping at performing, "Thanh Am Xanh" has turned music into a catalyst connecting agencies, businesses and communities in the journey of sowing green seeds.
In 2021, the group started with the concert "Sound of the Mountains and Forests" with nearly 200 artists and volunteers participating, calling for funds to plant 8,800 bamboo trees in De Xu Phinh commune, Mu Cang Chai district (now Pung Luong commune, Lao Cai province).
The initial success paved the way for larger-scale activities in 2022, when the group built a nursery of 12,000 bamboo trees and planted an additional 10,000 May Khao Lam bamboo trees, supporting the livelihoods of 16 local households. In the same year, the “Tre Festival” concert held in November attracted nearly 10,000 spectators, successfully raising nearly 128,000 bamboo trees - a number that exceeded expectations, affirming the spreading power of music associated with social responsibility.
In 2023, the project will focus more on expertise, when the group organizes training on forest planting techniques for local people and conducts a trial planting of more than 2,500 bamboo trees in areas devastated by natural disasters. By 2024, music will continue to accompany charity through many activities: the "Thread of Love" program to help H'Mong ethnic students preserve traditional embroidery; coordinate with units to plant 500 ivory bamboo trees at Giong Temple; and start construction of the first livelihood bamboo park in Mu Cang Chai.
In 2025, the "Green Sound" concert at Ho Guom Theater successfully raised funds for more than 1,600 bamboo trees, while the group and local people continued to plant more than 3,000 new trees at De Xu Phinh Bamboo Park, gradually turning this place into a bright spot for sustainable development associated with eco-tourism .
The music of “Thanh Am Xanh” is not only limited to the stage, but also gradually creates changes in social life. Teacher Hoang Thi Mui (De Xu Phinh Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Lao Cai Province) said: Thanks to the companionship of “Thanh Am Xanh”, people actively participate in planting bamboo, both to preserve the land and create landscapes, while developing the economy and tourism.
The group “Thanh Am Xanh” plays bamboo musical instruments in a very unique way, with quality musical works. Their music nights are always well received by the public, creating both artistic value and raising funds for bamboo planting. This is a creative direction, demonstrating the artist’s passion in calling on the community to join hands in protecting the environment.
People's Artist Hoang Anh Tu
The group also teaches highland students to perform traditional music, helps them preserve brocade embroidery and promote ethnic products, contributing to building the school and homeland more and more beautiful.
From an artistic perspective, People's Artist Hoang Anh Tu commented: The group "Thanh Am Xanh" plays bamboo musical instruments in a very unique way, with quality musical works. Their music nights are always well received by the public, creating both artistic value and raising funds to plant bamboo. This is a creative direction, demonstrating the artist's passion in calling on the community to join hands in protecting the environment.
In the coming time, the group will continue to organize fundraising concerts, expand the network of accompanying artists and bring traditional music closer to the younger generation. The artists hope that each work will sow a green seed in the community's awareness, to together preserve and create a sustainable future.
Amidst concerns about climate change, “Thanh Am Xanh” is gradually contributing to building a healthy and sustainable green future in Vietnam.
