For the first time, a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performed a special surgery to treat urinary cancer.

(Dan Tri) - A 6-hour completely endoscopic surgery performed for the first time by doctors at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City saved a man with prostate cancer.

On July 28, speaking to Dan Tri reporter, a representative of Nguyen Trai Hospital (HCMC) said that recently, doctors here performed a special surgery to treat a patient with prostate cancer.

The patient is Mr. NTK (73 years old). Taking a medical history, when treating cardiovascular disease in March, Mr. K. discovered benign prostatic hyperplasia through a general abdominal ultrasound. The patient then had to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia with medication.

At the end of May, the patient underwent a blood test and received results that suggested prostate cancer. Mr. K. was further ordered to have an MRI of the prostate, which showed a large and abnormal prostate area, with a high risk of cancer.

By early June, the patient's pathology results confirmed the diagnosis of prostate cancer localized in the right lobe. Bone scans showed no metastasis.

At this time, the patient is carefully advised on 3 treatment methods including: prostate radiotherapy with monthly endocrine chemotherapy, radical prostatectomy or palliative treatment.

After 2 weeks of thinking and preparing, the patient and his family decided to have laparoscopic radical prostatectomy at Nguyen Trai Hospital.

Specialist Doctor Phan Lien Khuong, Head of the Department of Urology at Nguyen Trai Hospital, said that before the surgery, the patient's underlying diseases such as high blood pressure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were carefully treated by the team for more than a week. After the underlying diseases were stable, the surgery was performed.

The surgery lasted 6 hours, the patient lost about 600ml of blood. After surgery, the patient was closely monitored, given protein, antibiotics and pain relief. On the 7th day after surgery, the patient had the stitches removed, had a catheter inserted, was discharged and scheduled for a follow-up appointment.

Currently, the patient has had the urethral catheter removed, is urinating normally again, and has been advised to continue monthly hormonal chemotherapy after treatment.

Specialist Doctor Nguyen Luong Vu, a member of the treatment team, shared that radical prostatectomy (including the prostate and two seminal vesicles) is a radical treatment method for localized prostate carcinoma, especially for low-risk and intermediate-risk groups.

Extraperitoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy has many advantages over traditional open surgery, such as high aesthetics, no long incision on the abdomen, reduced risk of surgical site infection, very short treatment time and quick recovery.

Mr. K's case is also the first time that doctors at the Department of Urology, Nguyen Trai Hospital have performed a technique considered the pinnacle of urinary tract surgery.

To successfully perform the above method, the department has had time to prepare all the endoscopic instruments and personnel. In the coming time, doctors will continue to find ways to shorten the surgery time so that patients can receive the most convenient treatment.
