Despite PSG dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Botafogo showed discipline and tactical rigor. The Brazilian side defended solidly and exploited counter-attacks to their advantage. Thanks to that, Igor Jesus scored the only goal to help Botafogo earn 3 points and have a good chance of advancing to the next round of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.
The win means Botafogo have become the first South American team to defeat the UEFA Champions League holders in a major tournament in 13 years. The last time a South American side did so was in 2012, when Corinthians beat Chelsea in the final and won the same tournament.
The defeat also came as a shock to PSG, who had been in impressive form before, winning six consecutive matches. In their last two games, the Ligue 1 club won 5-0 against Inter Milan in the Champions League final and 4-0 against Atletico Madrid in their opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™.
Igor Jesus has been a hero for Botafogo at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, scoring twice in two games against Seattle Sounders and PSG. The 24-year-old has troubled opposition defences with his speed, stamina and dribbling skills.
The Telegraph reports that Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal to sign Jesus and another Botafogo player, Jair Cunha, for a combined fee of £30m. Both will play in the Premier League next season.
