The merger of provinces and cities involves knowledge in a number of subjects, especially Geography, but according to a representative of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), this does not affect the high school graduation exam and candidates' papers...

Candidates and parents should not set too high expectations.

The 2025 high school graduation exam is the first year that the Ministry of Education and Training has innovated the exam plan. Accordingly, each candidate will take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects including Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology. Literature will be tested in essay form, the remaining subjects will be tested in multiple choice form. The exam is organized into 3 sessions, including 1 Literature session, 1 Math session and 1 elective exam session. Candidates will be arranged according to the elective exam combination to optimize the exam room and exam score.

Professor Huynh Van Chuong, Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training), affirmed that the high school graduation exam is still part of the generaleducation program that candidates study. The contents related to provinces and cities remain the same as before the Resolution on the arrangement of provincial administrative units was passed by the National Assembly. With many new points of this year's high school graduation exam, Professor Huynh Van Chuong especially reminded localities to be extremely careful in printing and copying exam questions to avoid mistakes. Along with that, the exam invigilators are also noted to need to be thoroughly trained.

In 2025, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the total number of candidates registering for the high school graduation exam is 1,165,289; an increase of 93,894 registrations compared to last year.

Before the first exam under the new program this year, most students were worried and stressed. Ms. Nguyen Thanh Nga, a school psychologist at Dinh Tien Hoang High School ( Hanoi ), said that the school had organized at least two mock exams for students this semester, helping them to practice with new exam formats, get used to the pressure of the exam room and practice test-taking skills. However, there is still pressure from the expectations of parents or from the students themselves. Many students set very high goals, even beyond their actual abilities, leading to stress and anxiety when entering the exam. Or some parents put too much emphasis on scores, top schools, and "hot" majors while their children may have clearly identified their passions and abilities. The prolonged disagreement has left many students torn between their own desires and their families' expectations.

Nguyen Van Long, a 12th grade student at a high school in Ha Nam, shared that he was worried not because he had not studied, but because this year's exam questions followed a new curriculum and were different from before. "In addition to memorizing knowledge, we also have to learn how to reason and do the test according to our abilities. It feels like we are walking on an unfinished bridge. The closer the exam date gets, the more I lose sleep because I am both studying and worrying about choosing a major."

Another important factor that psychologists believe is that a suitable study schedule not only helps students master knowledge but also reduces stress. Students should divide their study time reasonably, alternating between subjects and periods of rest and relaxation. This helps their minds not to be overloaded, while maintaining learning efficiency.

Need a strong mentality before real problems

With changes in the approach, content and format of the Math exam, Mr. Tran Manh Tung (Math teacher in Hanoi) pointed out 6 groups of "golden" skills that students need to focus on to get high scores on the Math exam. In the exam room, psychology greatly affects the effectiveness of the exam. Students need to be calm, not get bogged down in difficult questions, and know when to skip to do other questions.

According to Mr. Tung, this year's Math exam is divided into 3 parts: Part I (3 points): Includes 12 basic multiple choice questions. This is the part that students need to do quickly, confidently, and without making mistakes. Ideal time: 10 minutes. Part II (4 points): True/false multiple choice test includes 4 questions, each question has 4 ideas arranged from easy to difficult. Many of the last ideas are puzzles.

Candidates should spend 30 - 35 minutes to handle it carefully. Part III (3 points): Includes 6 fill-in-the-blank math problems, requiring thinking and writing skills. Each question is a small, complex problem, so invest 45 - 50 minutes. Students must wear a watch in the exam room to actively control the time, avoiding being passive because they cannot see the wall clock or the electronic clock too far away, Mr. Tung noted.

For problems with real-life contexts, Mr. Tung advises students to clearly identify which is the “shell” of reality and which is the “core” of mathematics. Underlining keywords will help students quickly identify the type of problem. For example, a problem about a wine barrel rotating around an axis will easily confuse students if they do not realize that the problem is essentially a problem about calculating the volume of a solid of revolution - 12th grade calculus knowledge.

Mr. Tung believes that students should not follow a single solution. In multiple-choice tests, time is of the essence, so students need to find a way to solve the problem concisely and effectively, without having to present it in a long-winded manner like in an essay test. For spatial geometry problems, students should draw by hand to guide their thinking, instead of trying to draw it beautifully with a ruler. In addition, students need to limit their dependence on calculators. Using a calculator for simple calculations is unnecessary, it only slows down the test-taking process.

When filling in the answers, candidates must be especially careful with commas, minus signs, and rounded numbers, because the scanning machine only recognizes the correct answer. The teacher shared: “I have witnessed many students who did the calculations correctly but lost points because they filled in the wrong answer sheet. This is a very unfortunate thing that you can completely avoid”. Comparing the exam to a football match, teacher Tran Manh Tung encouraged students: “You have to compete until the 90th minute. Even if there are 5 minutes left, you can still do 1-2 more questions. Don’t give up halfway just because you see difficulties ahead”.

With careful preparation, mastering test-taking strategies and maintaining a proactive mindset, 12th grade students can confidently conquer Math, one of the most "heavyweight" subjects in this year's high school graduation exam, Mr. Tung advised.
