Brandon Simpson, a photographer living in northern Ontario, Canada, recently found an incredible deal at his local thrift store. He picked up a Leica M3 Double Stroke camera for just $10.49 .
Simpson said he visits the store regularly. That day, he saw an employee putting new items on the shelves. When he saw a leather camera case, he thought it was just an ordinary camera.
"My heart stopped when I saw that logo," Simpson recalled of his experience.
Inside the brown leather box with the Leica logo is a Leica M3 Double Stroke. On the market today, M3 Single Stroke models cost around $1,100 . Double Stroke versions like the one Simpson found can be had for $2,000 or more at KEH. On the official Leica Classic site, an M3 Double Sstroke costs more than $4,600 .
Simpson's story went viral on Reddit when he shared it in the Leica community. Many users couldn't believe it was true.
"He's lying right? Guys, someone tell me he's lying," one Reddit user commented.
Another joked: "The thrift stores in my city only have dirty socks, grandma's china, and strange smells."
Simpson will be shooting with this camera soon, and trusts it will still work perfectly.
"This is definitely the coolest old thing I've ever found," Simpson said. "I'll always remember the feeling of finding it."
This isn’t the first time someone has gotten a Leica for a ridiculously low price. In 2021, 16-year-old Tyler B of Michigan picked up a complete Leica M camera kit for just $15 at a church sale. In 2017, another Reddit user bought a Leica M2 for $5 at Value Village, the same store where Simpson found his M3.
Although most thrift stores sell mostly low-value items, lucky shoppers with a keen eye can occasionally find some truly worthwhile bargains.
