When the 'ball' is passed to VFF's feet!

TPO - On July 9, VPF said it had received official dispatches from 7 clubs proposing to register a maximum of 4 foreign players in the roster for both the National Championship (V-League) and the National Cup in the 2025/26 season.

These seven teams include: CAHN, Thep Xanh Nam Dinh , The Cong Viettel, HAGL, Ha Noi FC, SHB Da Nang and Hai Phong. The proposal also includes the clubs being allowed to use a maximum of 4 foreign players on the field at all times during the matches. The reason given by some teams is that foreign players are expensive and if not used, it would be a waste.

At the VFF Executive Committee meeting held in March, the clubs agreed to register 4 foreign players and use a maximum of 3 players on the field. First Division teams are allowed to register a maximum of 1 foreign player. As for the clubs representing the AFF and AFC, there is no limit on the number of foreign players registered in the tournament roster.

It is easy to see that most of the teams that support the increase of foreign players both on the field and in the registration list have strong financial conditions. CAHN, Thep Xanh Nam Dinh or The Cong Viettel , Hanoi FC are all top "shoppers" on the transfer market. Hai Phong of Chairman Van Tran Hoan is "pumped" with tens of billions of VND each year.

V-League may become difficult for "poor" teams

It can be imagined that if the above proposal is passed, big teams will have more conditions to buy foreign players. However, the teams from "poor families" will have difficulty in competing. Thep Xanh Nam Dinh is a recent example with 2 consecutive V-League championships bearing the mark of foreign players, most notably striker Nguyen Xuan Son.

The problem for VFF and VPF is that in the position of "weighing" the game, which option will VFF "lean" towards in relation to assessing the impact on the overall development of football. For example, in the past, SLNA complained about the transfer age of young players because they were often "gutted" by rich teams. Or recently, when under pressure about the issue of naturalized players in the Vietnam national team, VFF also said that using naturalized players must take into account the long-term impact.

The decision will be difficult because the big clubs often have weight, and behind them are powerful bosses.
