The video , shot by an Instagram user, shows the man entering a cemetery in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. He then stops at a grave, where a few offerings and a can of beer are placed.
In the video, the man says "leave it to chance" and flips a coin before popping the beer can open and drinking it.
“Rest in peace,” the man said as he drank his beer. Before leaving, he placed a few cigarettes on the grave.
The video was shared, immediately causing a wave of outrage among Japanese public opinion. The identity of the foreign visitor was identified as Lochie Jones from Australia. Many people criticized Jones for disrespecting local culture.

"Going to another country and desecrating graves, taking away offerings left by their relatives for the deceased. That is cultural decadence," one account commented harshly.
"In Japanese tradition, the items that appear on graves are not decorations. The family of the deceased places food, drinks, and incense as a way of remembering. If strangers come to use them, it is not only impolite, but also deeply disrespectful," another opinion said.
Along with that, many people called on the government to quickly investigate and deport the Australian guest from Japan.
However, according to initial confirmation from the government, the video was filmed in mid-August. On September 2, the Australian embassy in Japan also spoke out about the incident.
The Australian embassy representative affirmed that it will work closely with the Japanese government to ensure that visitors from Australia comply with local laws and regulations.
"We encourage proper behavior from our citizens when visiting Japan. In addition, we also take these issues seriously and will coordinate with relevant authorities," the embassy said.
In the face of fierce criticism, Jones recently apologized. He said that this was a mistake on his part and affirmed that he should not have done that.
However, this apology was not enough to appease the anger of the Japanese people. Many people called on the government to take drastic action and ban this tourist from entering the country after his offensive behavior.
It is known that this is not the first time foreigners have sought online fame by causing offense in Japan.
In 2023, a male YouTuber named Fidias with 2.4 million followers posted a video showing off his tricks to take free trains across Japan with his friends.
A month earlier, Japanese police arrested an American streamer for trespassing on a construction site. According to police officer Genta Hayashi, the suspect, 23-year-old American Ismael Ramsey Khalid, wore a mask and repeatedly shouted "Fukushima" at workers at the site, a reference to the nuclear power plant disaster. In another video, Khalid also harassed passengers on a train.
Amid the increasing number of international visitors to Japan, many locals have expressed their frustration at witnessing many unethical behaviors.
