China's Jaecoo J5 - "Miniature Range Rover" is coming to Vietnam?

The Chinese Jaecoo J5 attracts attention with its Range Rover-like appearance, outstanding width and multi-link rear suspension rarely seen in the B-class SUV group.

In June 2024, Omoda Jaecoo announced a series of products expected to arrive in Vietnam in the future, including the new Jaecoo J5. This B-size SUV will compete with hot-selling rivals in Vietnam such as; Toyota Yaris Cross, Mitsubishi Xforce, Hyundai Creta and Honda HR-V

The new Jaecoo J5 2025 attracts attention with its exterior design that strongly evokes the Range Rover Evoque, from the window shape, the longitudinal ribs of the body to the seamless LED taillights with a horizontal decorative bar with the words "JAECOO".

The Chinese car company hides the exhaust pipe behind the simple bumper and the wiper under the spoiler, making the overall look of the B-size SUV more neat and modern. At the front, the car inherits the large vertical multi-slat grille and square LED headlights from its "senior" J7, but the headlights and daytime running lights have been grouped into one cluster.

The front bumper is accented with large, rough black plastic panels, with no fog lights. The front suspension is MacPherson struts, while the rear is a multi-link type - a plus on paper when most B-class cars using internal combustion engines are "loyal" to torsion bar suspension. The 18-inch wheels come with 235/55 tires that are wider and thicker than the Xforce and Yaris Cross.

Unlike the J7 and J6, the Jaecoo J5 does not use hidden door handles. Customers can choose a two-tone exterior paint color. The width of the car is impressive at 1,860mm, approaching a C-class car like the Hyundai Tucson (1,865mm). The remaining dimensions include a length of 4,380mm (10mm less than the Xforce), a height of 1,650mm, a wheelbase of 2,620mm, the same as the Yaris Cross and 30mm shorter than the Xforce.

The J5's interior is minimalist like many cars from the billion-people country today. Users will control most functions via a 13.2-inch touch screen with 2K resolution, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connection.

The two-spoke steering wheel has a unique shape; the narrow dashboard has an interface similar to the mid-size MPV Hyundai Custin in Vietnam. The gear lever on the steering column helps to free up a significant amount of space in the center console. The glossy black plastic surfaces have a carbon fiber-like pattern.

Jaecoo says the Jaecoo J5 cabin is certified by TÜV SÜD (a German company renowned for its product testing). Some of the notable amenities include dual-zone automatic air conditioning, 50W wireless charging, 6-way power front seats, 64-color ambient lighting, and an electric trunk. The car is even equipped with a karaoke feature with a wireless microphone included in the car.

Safety is ensured by a series of advanced driver assistance features (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot warning. The 360-degree camera not only displays 3D but also simulates the space under the car.

The Jaecoo J5 shares the same 1.5L turbocharged engine as the Omoda C5. The machine produces a maximum capacity of 145 horsepower and a maximum torque of 210Nm, connected to a CVT gearbox and front-wheel drive. The manufacturer announced an average fuel consumption of 7.5 liters/100km (WLTC standard).

Advanced driving assistance technologies ADAS level 2.5 are fully equipped for the car such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system, etc. 360-degree camera is also equipped for this Chinese car model.

In Thailand, the company offers the pure electric variant J5 EV with 208 horsepower and 288Nm, 60.9kWh battery for a range of up to 470km. The price of Jaecoo J5 2025 is currently sold in the Malaysian market from 120,000 Ringgit (about 751 million VND). It is predicted that this model will arrive in Vietnam at the end of this year.
