India orders more S-400 systems from Russia

Contrary to speculation that India is giving up on Russian weapons, the country is considering buying two more S-400 air defense systems, even though the previous contract was delayed by four years.

Although Russia has failed to meet the previous deadline for delivering the S-400 air defense system, India is still considering placing an order for two more new S-400 air defense systems. Photo: @Zona Militar.

India's initial order for five S-400 air defense systems was signed in 2018 and was expected to be delivered to India the same year, Indian Defense News reported. However, the delivery date has been pushed back to 2023. Photo: @Defense News.

However, Russia’s full-scale assault on Ukraine has had its adjustments, both due to supply chain disruptions due to sanctions and the need to replace war losses. Photo: @Defense News.

Furthermore, classified data on the capabilities and vulnerabilities of the S-400 system has been leaked online before. This has been confirmed by the successful attacks by Ukraine on these air defense systems, and the operational problems faced by the Indian military. Photo: @Zona Militar.

India, on the other hand, insists the S-400 is needed to meet urgent security needs, while indigenous air defense systems are expected to replace it by 2028-2029. Photo: @Defense News.

However, due to the nature of the Indian defense industry, which has been unable to develop a combat engine for nearly 40 years, the proposed 2028-2029 timeline above remains open. Photo: @Zona Militar.

It should be noted that the majority of India’s military hardware is of Russian origin, including T-72 and T-90 tanks, Su-30MKI fighters and anti-ship missiles. This is largely driven by favorable deals, including provisions for local production. Photo: @Defense News.

Therefore, Russia is now trying to promote more of its weapons, including the most modern Su-57 aircraft, through technology transfer to India. However, it is still unclear how successful this deal will be, as India is developing its own fifth-generation fighter. Photo: @ The Defense Post.

The bottom line is that arms cooperation between India and Russia is expected to be further enhanced amid the volatile geopolitical landscape. Photo: @Zona Militar.

This could bring additional funding and orders to the Russian defense industry, which is starting to struggle due to a financial shortage. Photo: @ The Defense Post.
