Iran summons Russian charge d'affaires after Russia joint statement

Iran has summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires in Tehran, state media reported, after Moscow and Arab states issued a joint statement earlier this week challenging Iran’s claims to disputed islands in the Persian Gulf.

Iran's official IRNA news agency said the Russian envoy was summoned on December 23, and handed over a diplomatic note to Moscow.

The note stated that Tehran opposed the statement of the 6th Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum issued in Morocco, which called for a peaceful solution to resolve disputes between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Earlier on December 23, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told his Russian counterpart by phone that "respect for the sovereignty and integrity of nations is one of the fundamental principles in relations between nations," according to IRNA.

This is the second time this year Iran has summoned the head of the Russian diplomatic mission to protest comments about the disputed islands.

In 2022, Iran also summoned the Chinese envoy for a similar joint statement with Arab states.

Iran took control of the three islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb after British forces withdrew in 1971. Tehran considers them an “integral” part of its territory. The UAE also claims the islands and has long pushed for a negotiated solution.

The three islands are strategically located in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which about one-fifth of the world's oil supplies pass.
