After years of speculation, Apple’s first foldable phone may be nearing completion. A new leak from China has revealed key details about the prototype device’s screen size.
According to the source from the Digital Chat Station account on the social network Weibo, the prototype of the folding smartphone developed by Apple is equipped with a 7.7-inch main screen when opened and a 5.5-inch secondary screen on the outside. Although slightly smaller than the rumored 7.8-inch number, this is still a number in the small tablet segment.
For comparison, Samsung's newly launched Galaxy Z Fold7 has an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch secondary display. Oppo's Find N5 is even larger, with an 8.12-inch foldable display. So Apple seems to be going in the opposite direction, prioritizing real-world experiences over the pursuit of large screen sizes.
The reason could be the screen ratio. According to reports, the foldable iPhone will use a 4:3 ratio, similar to the iPad mini. This suggests that Apple may want to bring a familiar experience to iPad users, instead of creating a hybrid device between a phone and a tablet like Samsung or Oppo are doing.
Digital Chat Station also said that the foldable iPhone prototype has been slightly adjusted in design, which matches the previous analysis by expert Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicted that the device would be around 9-9.5 mm thick when folded. Although thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold7 (8.9 mm), this is still an acceptable level for a first-generation smartphone.
What makes the foldable iPhone different may be its approach. Apple is apparently delaying its launch until it can fully address the crease in the display, a common limitation of current foldable devices. While there is no official confirmation, sources say that the Apple foldable smartphone could launch as early as 2026.
If the above leak is accurate, the foldable iPhone may not be the biggest foldable device, but it has the potential to be the most refined product in the segment.
