Students exchange trash for school supplies, put money in piggy banks to raise funds

On the morning of July 27, the Women's Union of Go Vap District (HCMC) organized a Children's Skillful Hands Festival and a green market, attracting a large number of students and local residents to participate.

At the festival, students will collect trash such as bottles, batteries, milk cartons, cardboard boxes, plastic bags, etc. to exchange for gifts such as school supplies or trees.

Students excitedly choose gifts for themselves

More than 1.6 tons of garbage were collected on the morning of July 27.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Phuong, Vice President of the Go Vap District Women's Union, said students can exchange trash for money and use that money to raise funds to support their peers.

"Each branch has a piggy bank. All the money raised in a year will be used to create scholarships for disadvantaged students in the area. This not only helps students protect the environment and promote mutual support, but also contributes to creating a united community," said Ms. Phuong.

Environmental protection ideas

Children participate in the contest of making paintings from recycled materials.

As one of the students who arrived early at the festival, Pham Phuong Linh, a student at Huynh Van Nghe Secondary School (Go Vap District), said she collected cardboard boxes and plastic bottles. In addition to exchanging trash for gifts, Linh also enjoyed the zero-dong clothing stall and the quiz area with prizes.

Linh said she saw volunteers soaking in black canals to clear the flow, beaches full of trash... and gradually changing their daily habits.

"The environment is a shared environment. If we are not aware of protecting the environment, we are destroying our own lives. At home, I practice the habit of sorting waste at the source, using recyclable or biodegradable items," Linh said.

Instead of taking gifts home, many people choose to exchange trash for money to put in the piggy bank for donations.

If they answer the environmental question correctly, the kids will receive a favorite school tool.

Although only an elementary school student, Tran Mai Ngoc Duong (Go Vap District) knows how to "magically" transform old newspapers and books into vivid paintings and eye-catching handmade decorations for her family. Duong said that this helps her increase her creativity and reduce waste released into the environment.

Ms. Phuong said that in the morning, the festival collected more than 1.6 tons of waste; at the same time, received a lot of old clothes, used school uniforms (still over 70% new) to give to students in difficult circumstances.
