However, that mindset has now changed, many families orient their children to learn a profession that suits their abilities, reducing exam pressure.
Change thinking, perception
In the 10th grade entrance exam, Hoang Hong Phong passed his first choice to enter Hiep Hoa 6 High School ( Bac Ninh ), but he chose to study mechatronics at the College of Technology and Engineering. "My parents knew that I passed the public high school entrance exam and wanted me to study there. However, I shared my wish to study a trade and study culture at the same time, and after finishing the course, I would have a high school diploma and a vocational certificate. After a period of thinking and understanding, my parents agreed to let me study the 9+ system," Phong shared.
Similarly, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thien Kim (An Hoi Dong, Ho Chi Minh City) has two children who passed their first choice to enter grade 10 of a public high school, but both chose to study in the 9+ system, both vocational and general education. Ms. Kim shared: “4 years ago, my eldest daughter passed the NV1 exam to enter a public high school, and before that, she had been an excellent student for 4 consecutive years. However, she still decided to choose to study at a vocational college to shorten her study time and enter the labor market early to help her family.
Listening to my child's story, I was quite surprised and worried about the job opportunities if I studied a trade early. However, after researching the school with my child and asking for opinions from seniors, I respected this decision. When my child studies the right major he loves, he will develop his strengths and not be under pressure. On the other hand, the current mechanism of connecting schools has been focused on; both general education and vocational training are allocated appropriate time, so I am quite assured."
In the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade entrance exam, Ms. Kim's youngest child scored 22.25 points and passed his first choice, Nguyen Cong Tru High School (Ho Chi Minh City). "For 4 consecutive years in middle school, my child was an excellent student but still chose to study information technology at Vien Dong College. Seeing my child's legitimate wishes and desires, my family respected them," Ms. Kim shared.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Toan - Director of Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center (Son Tay, Hanoi ): "Currently, after graduating from secondary school, students have many directions to achieve their learning goals. Therefore, the fact that they choose to study at vocational education and continuing education centers or study at vocational colleges is also a good sign. Because during the secondary school learning process, students have clearly determined their own direction.
At the same time, students with difficult circumstances who choose to study vocational training and cultural studies after graduation can go to work early to support their families. It is worth mentioning that in many businesses, when students come to do internships, there is still a salary payment mechanism - which is also a mechanism to encourage students to choose vocational training after graduating from secondary school.

Good signal flow
According to the assessment of Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhan - former Head of the Political and Ideological Department, Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City: "The tendency of students and parents to choose vocational training after graduating from junior high school is a good sign because the educational differentiation work has been effective, parents' thinking and evaluation of educational levels have gradually changed to be more realistic".
Mr. Nhan cited that the current job market has a surplus of teachers and a shortage of workers. Parents and students should base their choices on the job market so that they can go to work immediately after finishing their studies. In addition, if they want to continue their studies while working, they can choose to study while working or transfer. The ultimate goal is still to work in a way that suits their abilities and major.
In order for students to have the right choice for their abilities, for many years Thach Ban Secondary School (Long Bien, Hanoi) has organized practical activities to advise and guide students in their careers as well as invite parents to participate.
Ms. Khuc Thi My Hanh - Principal of Thach Ban Secondary School (Long Bien, Hanoi) said: "The school has integrated career counseling into the teaching of cultural subjects and experiential activities so that students can form the habit of learning about current majors and training programs. Especially for 9th grade students, we pay special attention to the work of streaming based on their abilities."
Ms. Hanh added that students who are good at cultural subjects will be guided to choose their first and second choices to suit their learning ability, and based on the predicted benchmark scores and competition ratio in the entrance exam to grade 10 of high school. Students with good practical ability will be guided to choose to develop their abilities... so that parents and students will not be pressured at the end of the year.
For grade 9 students, in the career orientation process, we invited experts and representatives of vocational colleges to participate in consulting at the parent-teacher meeting for all grade 9 students. From there, parents were advised on how to support their children psychologically during the stressful exam preparation days and choosing NV1 and NV2 schools, understanding the benefits and strengths of vocational training programs in parallel with high school cultural studies, and based on their children's abilities to provide appropriate advice.
“Thanks to the diverse and appropriate solutions, the school's work of streaming students after secondary school has been more effective; the thinking of parents and students after graduating from secondary school has changed positively,” said Ms. Hanh.
“Currently, learning opportunities are increasingly open, so parents and students are gradually changing their thinking in career counseling and guidance. At the same time, the 2018 General Education Program with the goal of helping students master general knowledge, effectively apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in life and self-study throughout their lives, has provided guidance on choosing suitable careers”, Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhan - former Head of the Political and Ideological Department, Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City shared.
