The Chinese national team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after the third qualifying round in Asia. Therefore, the team of the billion-people country fired coach Branko Ivankovic (Croatian).

Replacing the Croatian coach, it is very likely that coach Shin Tae Yong will be appointed. Indonesian and Korean media reported that the Chinese Football Association (CFA) is only waiting for the nod and official signature of Mr. Shin Tae Yong.
If all goes well, the South Korean coach will lead the Chinese team in July this year, participating in the East Asian Football Championship. This tournament includes teams from China, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong (China).
Coach Shin Tae Yong was fired by the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) in early January this year, clearing the way for Dutch coach Patrick Kluivert to lead the team of the archipelago country.
Despite losing his job in Indonesia, coach Shin Tae Yong is still highly regarded for his professional skills. Mr. Shin Tae Yong helped the Korean team defeat the German team at the 2018 World Cup.
The fact that coach Shin Tae Yong was abandoned by PSSI, giving way to coach Kluivert, is considered to stem from the fact that the current Indonesian team has many players of Dutch origin, not because coach Shin Tae Yong is incompetent.
If he agrees to lead the Chinese team, coach Shin Tae Yong's task will be to build the team's strength for the 2027 Asian Cup and prepare for the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.
