• Heaven's blessings in flood season

In the flood season, many delicious vegetables appear along the West Sea dike, especially water chives.

By using many different harvesting methods, some people row boats to pick vegetables, others dive underwater to pick chives, watercress, water mimosa, lotus shoots, etc., helping farmers in flooded areas earn extra income.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen, Coi 6A Hamlet, Da Bac Commune, and 3 relatives, harvest water chives every day, selling for over 800,000 VND/day. This job of picking natural gifts is very hard, but for over a month, Ms. Quyen and her siblings have harvested about 3 tons of water chives together, selling for over 30 million VND. Ms. Quyen said: "Every year, after the sowing season, the summer-autumn rice is about to have ears, this period of crop gap often has a lot of rain, deep water, there will be a lot of vegetables, creating jobs for people during the off-season".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen harvests water chives and earns tens of millions of dong each season.

To get a kilo of water chives, farmers have to work hard to immerse themselves in water to pull them, then pick and wash each clump thoroughly, and bundle them before selling them to traders.

Another unique specialty of the U Minh Ha region during the flood season is the naturally grown rau mac, which thrives during the flood season. Wherever the water rises, the rau mac grows tall, with strong vitality, this vegetable also helps bring in a decent income for many poor households here.

Mrs. Le Thi Nhung and her husband, Rach Cui hamlet, Khanh Binh commune, have 5 hectares of flooded rice fields, unable to cultivate. They mainly live on the "heavenly gift" of watercress.

In Sao Luoi hamlet, Coi 6B hamlet, Da Bac commune, every day hundreds of kilograms of watercress are harvested and sold to traders.

Mr. Phan Bach, Sao Luoi hamlet, said: "For over a month, my family's low-lying land has been filled with watercress. The water is deep, and watercress grows in large clumps, over 1 meter long. Besides freshwater fish, watercress, watercress... help bring in a significant source of income, selling for 10-15 thousand VND/kg."
