According to CNBC, Google's Google Cloud computing system suddenly experienced a widespread problem on June 12, causing a series of major internet services to be disrupted, including OpenAI, Shopify, GitHub, Twitch and many other technology platforms.

According to Google Cloud's status page, the outage began at 10:51 a.m. Pacific Time, with the message: “We are experiencing service issues with multiple GCP (Google Cloud Platform) products. Engineering is still investigating.”

By the end of the day, Google confirmed that customers continued to be affected to varying degrees and that there was no specific time frame for a fix.

This incident is considered a heavy blow to Google, in the context that the company is trying to narrow the gap with major competitors such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in the cloud infrastructure race.

Google Cloud is one of Alphabet's fastest growing businesses, driven in particular by high demand for artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Shopify, a major Google Cloud customer, posted on the X platform that it “is aware of some services being impacted.” And OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said it was experiencing issues with its single sign-on (SSO) system and other login methods. “ Our engineering team is working to mitigate the issue,” OpenAI wrote.

According to data from monitoring site Downdetector, more than 13,000 Google Cloud-related error reports were recorded around 11:30 a.m., before tapering off in the afternoon.

In addition to Google Cloud, a number of services were also affected, including: Twitch (owned by Amazon), GitLab, CoreWeave, Elastic, LangChain, Replit, Mailchimp (owned by Intuit), and even GitHub (owned by Microsoft).

This incident raises big questions about the stability and reliability of cloud infrastructure, especially in the context of many businesses and AI services increasingly relying on platforms like Google Cloud.
