Donating blood is not only a noble humanitarian act but also shows love, solidarity, and the spirit that every drop of blood given - a life remains.

For those who donate blood many times, their “red book” becomes more and more full over the years. And after the beautiful actions of those voluntary blood donors for the community, each remaining “red book” is also a treasure of “voluntary” blood saving that they have accumulated, which is truly worthy of respect.

Light the fire of charity

Going to Hanoi to attend the ceremony to honor 100 outstanding voluntary blood donors nationwide, Captain Doan Viet Hung (34 years old), Binh Loc Commune Police, Khanh Hoa Provincial Police was chosen as one of 5 police representatives nationwide to be honored this year.

Hung confided that he has been donating blood since he was a student at the People's Security University. To date, Captain Doan Viet Hung has a "fortune" of 55 "books" certifying blood donation.

Recalling the first time he donated blood, Hung said that on that day his best friend had an accident and posted online that he needed blood type AB. Hung, who has this blood type, did not hesitate to rush to the hospital to donate blood for his friend. After that, his friend was given emergency care and was stable and discharged from the hospital. From that blood donation, Hung's journey of giving to extend his life began and has continued until today.

“Donating blood to save lives is a very practical thing because it helps many people. I hope that this movement will spread more and more in society, and I will actively encourage more people to donate blood,” said Captain Doan Viet Hung.

After graduating from school and working at the Environmental Crime Prevention Police Department, Khanh Hoa Provincial Police, Hung began his journey to donate blood more often. Since 2015, Captain Hung started donating platelets once a month. After that, he was recruited by the Khanh Hoa Provincial Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center to join the Platelet Donation Club. Every time the Center needed platelets for emergency treatment, he immediately donated.

Doctor Trinh Hong Son (30 years old), working at the Department of Intensive Care and Anti-Poisoning (Yen Bai General Hospital) shared that each time he donates blood brings him a different feeling. Doctor Son has donated blood voluntarily more than 20 times, including 3 emergency blood donations, promptly supporting patients in critical condition.

Doctor Son remembers the most was the time the entire hospital focused on emergency care for a woman in labor who had uterine atony after giving birth and severe hemorrhagic shock. As doctors, we all wanted to save the patient’s life, but the hospital had mobilized a lot of blood but it was not enough, at that time 30 hospital staff focused on donating blood to save the patient’s life.

Even though the hospital had used up all the blood and supplies available in the warehouse, it still did not have enough. At that moment, without thinking, Dr. Son immediately went into the blood donation room to help the patient. For him, donating blood was not to be recognized but simply a natural reflex of someone who had sworn to "devote himself to the sick."

Doctor Trinh Hong Son shared that since he was a student, he participated in many volunteer activities and many voluntary blood donation programs, so he felt the noble meaning of blood donation. But perhaps the greatest motivation for him to donate blood and encourage many relatives and friends to donate blood was when he became an emergency doctor at the Provincial General Hospital, directly providing emergency care and treatment to seriously ill patients who required a lot of blood transfusions. Doctor Son also always promoted and encouraged his family, friends, relatives, and colleagues to register to participate in appropriate forms.

Mr. Pham Quang Long (48 years old), working at Hoa Hung Secondary School, Yen Hoa, Dong Nai, confided that when he was honored as one of the 100 outstanding blood donors, he felt very honored to continue to try harder in humanitarian blood donation activities. From 2013 to now, Mr. Long has donated blood nearly 40 times.

“Donating blood has become an indispensable activity for me. I donate blood 2-3 times a year. I remember the first time I donated blood through a friend. After that first blood donation, I felt comfortable, found the work meaningful and from then on I donated more often. Because this is an activity within my ability to help others by donating blood to save the lives of others when they are sick. I will continue to donate blood as long as I am healthy enough.”

These are stories about love, about hearts that are persistent in their dedication and social responsibility, and also about spreading the good things of life to everyone.

Empowering millions of patients

Over the years, the voluntary blood donation movement has been widely developed around the world as well as in Vietnam, attracting a large number of volunteers to participate.

Every year on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day to thank voluntary blood donors and encourage new volunteers to donate blood.

Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan emphasized that in recent years, the voluntary blood donation movement in Vietnam has had strong and sustainable development. Blood donated from the community not only ensures emergency services and treatment for patients, but also deeply spreads noble humanitarian and humane values in society. Voluntary blood donation has become a cultural beauty, a living symbol of the spirit of mutual love, of the Vietnamese heart of love and kindness.

Since 2008, when the Prime Minister decided to establish the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, blood donation in Vietnam has made great strides. Since then, the country has received nearly 20 million units of blood. In the first months of 2025 alone, through key campaigns such as "Pink Spring Festival", "Red Sunday", "National Voluntary Blood Donation Day April 7", we have received nearly 850,000 units of blood, reaching 50% of the annual plan target.

Since the beginning of 2025, the whole country has received nearly 850,000 units of blood, reaching 50% of the yearly plan thanks to large blood donation campaigns launched.

Outstanding blood donors - not only because of the impressive number of donations (over 60, 80, 100 times), but also because of their perseverance and silent dedication. They come from all over the country, from the armed forces, the medical sector, businesses, schools, people with rare blood types... They are outstanding blood donors, not only because of the number of donations (some people donate over 60, 80, 90, even over 100 times), but also because of their noble hearts coming from remote areas, from the armed forces, the medical sector, businesses, educational institutions, reserve blood donor clubs, people with rare blood types...

“They are silent heroes, who do not need titles or recognition, but have been writing songs of compassion in everyday life. They have chosen to contribute not with words, but with concrete actions, with their own blood, to prolong life, to light up hope and to give strength to millions of patients on their journey to fight disease,” Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan analyzed./.
