Vietnamese businesses strictly control quality, exported durian is increasingly "scoring points"
After a long period of difficulty, Vietnam's durian exports are clearly recovering, especially in the Chinese market - which consumes over 90% of the output.
Positive signs are reflected in export figures. According to the General Department of Customs, the export value of fruits and vegetables in June reached 807 million USD, up more than 30% compared to the previous month and up 20.2% compared to the same period last year. This is the first month of the year to record growth after 5 consecutive months of decline. Of this, durian contributed about 360 million USD, up more than 70% compared to May.
Since May, durian has officially regained its growth momentum. Currently, this item is expanding its market share in many markets such as mainland China, Thailand, Cambodia and Hong Kong. Export turnover in June shows that durian has returned to the stable level similar to 2024.
If this trend continues, durian export value could reach between US$500 and US$550 million per month during the peak season (September-October). However, prices are unlikely to reach the same high levels as in 2023-2024 due to increasingly abundant global supply with the participation of Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos in addition to Thailand and Vietnam in the official export market to China.
On the other hand, Vietnamese enterprises have significantly improved the control of technical indicators such as yellow O and cadmium – factors that used to cause goods to be returned. Many enterprises require growers and intermediaries to conduct quality checks before shipping, thereby significantly improving the customs clearance rate.
