My daughter's final exam for the first semester of grade 6 literature made me worry about the language materials outside the textbook.
When I picked up my child, I noticed the worried look of a girl who loves literature and creativity with language. She frowned and said the reading comprehension text was too long, it would take time to understand and answer 10 questions. Holding the text from her hand, I was really overwhelmed by the long reading comprehension text.
The teacher gave a test that quoted a part of the text from the memoir Wild Grass by writer To Hoai. Perhaps the teacher wanted the students to fully feel the character's mood on the first day of school and the heart of the kind grandmother. However, the test quoted a part of the text that spanned one and a half pages (A4 size) with about 63 lines of prose.
With this material, students must read, analyze each character, understand each detail, connect Vietnamese knowledge to answer 8 multiple choice questions. In the two essay questions, students must give their feelings about the content, messages drawn from the material and relate to themselves...
Requiring 6th graders to read and understand completely new material that has never been studied in the program to complete 10 questions is really too much and too much pressure for them.

Understanding the content of the text is one thing, expressing it in sentences and words is another. Teachers can only hope that students raise the right issues and get to the point, but cannot force them to analyze deeply.
This literature test shows that we are setting too high a demand for students who have just started secondary school. The final exam to assess students' abilities and adjust teachers' teaching methods is becoming a stressful race, because of difficult tests like this!
Previously, there were also controversies about inappropriate or too long literature test materials in many schools.

Textbooks Make Students Bored: What's the Solution?
While literature is increasingly considered dry and "hard to chew", causing students to study superficially, do difficult essay topics like this make students even more discouraged?

I think every teacher when starting to build an essay topic should pay more attention to the stage of choosing materials outside of textbooks and should adhere to the following 3 principles:
Firstly, the material must be suitable for the genre characteristics of the program, and the level of difficulty must be equivalent to the requirements for knowledge, capacity, and qualities.
Second, the material has moderate capacity, suitable for the cognitive level of the age group, and meets the prescribed test time.
Third, the material must ensure the specificity of literature, harmonize truth, goodness and beauty, be associated with cultural traditions and haveeducational value.
