According to information updated at 8:10 a.m. (Vietnam time), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East had a magnitude of up to 8.7, higher than the magnitude of 8 initially determined by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Meanwhile, a representative of the United Geophysical Service Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said the earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5. The crack spread southwest, stretching about 200km.

Also according to the latest information, JMA has issued a warning of a tsunami risk of up to 3 meters high hitting the coast of Hokkaido in northern Japan and the Ogasawara Islands in the south.

The agency added that it had recorded quakes measuring 2 on Japan's 7-magnitude seismic intensity scale in Hokkaido.

From the US, the Department of Emergency Management of Honolulu - the capital of Hawaii state, has called for the evacuation of some coastal areas of this state due to the risk of dangerous tsunamis after the earthquake.

Earlier, according to the USGS, the earthquake occurred in the sea 126 km east-southeast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, with a focal depth of 18.2 km. It is still unclear whether any damage occurred in the Russian Far East./.
