Proposal to establish a set of rules to govern AI weapons

At the global conference discussing artificial intelligence (AI) weapons held on April 29 and 30 in Vienna, Austria, experts assessed that AI has the potential to revolutionize war, similar to gunpowder and atomic bombs, making conflicts between humans unimaginably different and more dangerous than ever.

The conference statement affirmed “a strong commitment to urgently cooperate with all relevant parties to develop an international legal instrument to regulate autonomous weapons systems”.

The summary statement, which will be sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, also stressed that the world “has a responsibility to act and set rules to protect humanity”.

The global conference on AI weapons - organized and hosted by Austria in Vienna, attracted about 1,000 delegates, including many politicians and experts, from more than 140 countries around the world.
