(CLO) Former US President Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer, has died at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to the Carter Center. He was 100 years old.

“My dad is a hero, not just to me but to all who believe in peace , human rights and selfless love,” said Chip Carter, the former President's son.

However, during his term in office (1977-1981), Mr. Carter was an unpopular US President and was defeated by his successor Ronald Reagan in a landslide election in late 1980.

During Carter's childhood, his family moved several times, settling on a dirt road in Archery, which was almost entirely populated by poor African-American families. Carter was an active teenager and was given an acre of farm land, where he grew, packaged, and sold peanuts.

His presidency was marked by a succession of events - inflation, the energy crisis, the war in Afghanistan and the hostage crisis in Iran.

Despite his unpopularity, Mr. Carter championed human rights , energy conservation, and environmental protection throughout his tenure. He played a central role in negotiating the Camp David accords that led to the landmark peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

The accords consist of two main agreements: One is a framework for peace in the Middle East, including efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the other is a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

In 1977, he also pushed through the Panama Canal treaty, despite fierce opposition from conservatives. The deal gave Panama control of the canal starting in 2000.

After leaving the White House, he founded the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting human rights and conflict resolution. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

He has worked tirelessly to fight disease and poverty and can often be seen with a hammer in hand, helping to build affordable homes as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

In recent years, he has been a strong advocate for addressing climate change, calling on governments to take increased action to combat the effects of global warming.

Mr Carter is credited with being the first world leader to acknowledge climate change as a problem. In 1977, he launched the Global Report 2000 to explore how to protect the Earth and achieve “sustainable development” over the next 20 years.
