Shining from a difficult childhood

When it comes to modern Vietnamese music, the name Thanh Thuy is associated with one of the “pioneering” voices. One of the reasons why Thanh Thuy’s voice is so special is probably because her life has blended all three cultures of the North, Central and South.

She was born on a December day in Thua Thien Hue, her father was a Northerner who migrated to Hue to live and then met and fell in love with the famous female singer's mother. Her family did not have a tradition of art. She did not attend music school since she was a child. However, Thanh Thuy started singing quite early.

Around the time her family moved to the South, due to overwork, her mother became seriously ill and her father passed away early. The family of six lived in great hardship and poverty. Therefore, she started going to the Viet Long tea room in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) to start her singing career, earning extra income for the family. But not long after, her mother also passed away at the age of 39. The pain of losing her mother did not subside in the heart of the famous female singer at that time. She often sang at the tea room in a white dress and a black bandage on her chest for 3 years to mourn her beloved mother.

Perhaps, because she lost her parents in such a short period of time, Thanh Thuy's voice is associated with sadness and a charming husky tone. Not long after her debut, Thanh Thuy was loved by many audiences.

In 1958, at a tea room in Saigon, musician Trinh Cong Son came here to enjoy music, he accidentally heard Thanh Thuy singing. Her sad eyes, her melancholy voice filled with feelings made him unable to restrain himself and compose a song for his "muse". After 3 weeks, Trinh Cong Son mustered up the courage to give Thanh Thuy the neatly written page, and the song was played on stage. The moment Thanh Thuy sang "Uot Mi" was a historic moment, bringing Trinh's music to the audience for the first time, and at the same time making many people know more about the famous singer Thanh Thuy.

Returning to “Wet Eyes”, Trinh Cong Son once said that he saw Thanh Thuy singing “Autumn Rain” by Dang The Phong and she cried. At that time, Trinh Cong Son had known early that Thanh Thuy’s mother had tuberculosis. Every night she sang “Autumn Rain”, lying down waiting for her daughter to come home. Those tears, to this musician, were like a small rain, falling throughout his overly fragile and sensitive soul. He felt like that small rain had brought him back to a distant past. A certain obscure world, making him shed tears. From the tears of pity for Thanh Thuy’s mother, to the tears of his own “previous life”, Trinh Cong Son felt that there seemed to be a common destiny between the two cries. He said, they found each other, to form the initial entanglement. To form a spiritual asset of Trinh Cong Son. He also revealed: “Many songs were written before “Uột mi”, but “Uột mi” exists as its own destiny and mine. It seems that the Japanese really like it because the Japanese symphony orchestra recorded this song...”.

Later, he continued to compose the song “Thuong mot nguoi” to dedicate to the female singer. The famous singer Thanh Thuy herself said that at that time, she did not know that the two songs “Uot mi” and “Thuong mot nguoi” were composed by the late musician specifically for her. The two songs were almost “tailor-made” to suit her melancholy, ghostly voice.

In the 60s of the last century, the name Thanh Thuy was mentioned by many people as a stage star. Every song she sang attracted audiences. Even the actor and director Nguyen Long made a film “Thuy Da Di Roi” about Thanh Thuy, the soundtrack was composed by musician Y Van and performed by singer Hung Cuong. In addition to this film, Thanh Thuy also appeared on stage and television.

In the art world, her image always appears with a dignified, discreet, and graceful beauty. She herself is not a showy or fancy person.

Although she did not have a sophisticated, glamorous appearance, Thanh Thuy still scored points in the eyes of fans thanks to her singing voice and graceful, feminine appearance. In 1961, during a Miss Artist voting session at Anh Vu tea room, she was given the title of “first beauty”. From then on, the public often called her “Miss Artist”. Her name was associated with talent and beautiful appearance.

What is special is that, despite her beautiful appearance, brilliant career and many relationships in the art world, Thanh Thuy was never involved in any exciting and attractive love rumors like many of her colleagues at that time. She was often mentioned as a muse, respected and loved by contemporary artists.

Living the life of a “star”

Poet Nguyen Sa once wrote about the famous female singer: “Thanh Thuy is the female singer most praised in literature and poetry. Poet Hoang Truc Ly, writer Mai Thao, poet Vien Linh, writer Tuan Huy,... Because Thanh Thuy is the dream lover of an entire generation, including writers and poets.”

She is known for her songs in the golden music and pre-war music genres such as “Midnight in the street”, “Midnight rain”, “Sad street”… She is a singer who is given the most nicknames by the audience, such as “Tieng hat lie trai”, “Tieng hat gio 0”, “Tieng hat ve khoi”, and has had many songs written for her by some musicians, such as “Thuy da di roi”, “Duoc tin em loi chong”… and poems written for her.

Unlike many other lives with ups and downs, where “talent and misfortune rhyme together”, the life of famous singer Thanh Thuy is very easy. She lives in love with art, the admiration of her colleagues, and the warm embrace of her family.

In the early 60s, she shone on stage, becoming a talented singer, highly appreciated by the public and colleagues. Until 1964, she married actor On Van Tai - who appeared in the movie "Love Storm" with actress Kieu Chinh.

The two met in Nha Trang, and actor On Van Tai admired this talented and beautiful woman. He quickly dated and married her. The two had a happy and fulfilling marriage. After getting married, famous singer Thanh Thuy retired for a few years to take care of her family in Da Nang . Thanks to the encouragement of friends and fans, she returned to the spotlight.

The voice of famous singer Thanh Thuy is still beautiful, mysterious, with the added depth and calmness of a married woman. That tone makes the audience even more "crazy" about her. Singer Thanh Thuy's music career seems to be more favorable, developing strongly and steadily after marriage. In 1970, she won the award for best-selling female singer with the song "Love of life" composed by the Le Minh Bang group. The song marked her return after a period of absence. In 1972, she won 2 awards for the most beloved female singer of the year and the most favorite TV show of the year, of which she was the head. Famous in the music field, singer Thanh Thuy also participated in acting in a number of films such as "To tinh", "Hai chuyen xe hoa", "Mua trong binh minh"...

She started singing in the Shotguns band of musician Ngoc Chanh, and also founded the Thanh Thuy band, which she recorded and selected songs for herself. Her band was quite successful with nearly 30 tapes. In 1975, when she emigrated to live abroad, she was still active in the arts and released many music CDs to serve Vietnamese people abroad. She secretly used part of the money she earned to support her former colleagues who were facing difficulties.

Her life in old age is closely linked to family and art. She still lives with her husband, an actor, whom she has been with since 1964. None of the children of the famous singer Thanh Thuy and her husband follow the career of singers and actors like their parents, but each has their own path.

Musician Trinh Cong Son once shared about the famous female singer Thanh Thuy as follows: "Those tears were like a small rain on my fragile soul, making me retreat further into a world even more distant than the one that once made me shed tears". Another time, remembering the figure of Thanh Thuy wearing an ao dai, after a concert hurriedly returning home to her mother, Trinh Cong Son wrote her a song called "Love for a person": "Love for the smile and the loose hair/The autumn withered on the lips/Every night passing through the dark alley...".
