On September 12, security firm Kaspersky said that in just 3 months, from April to June this year, they blocked more than 4.8 million threats via websites on computers of Kaspersky security network participants in Vietnam. 1 in 5 Vietnamese people have faced cyber security incidents on websites.
Accordingly, cybercriminals continue to use two main methods to spread malware through web browsers: exploiting vulnerabilities in browsers and plugins (drive-by download attacks) and social engineering attacks.
Drive-by download attacks occur when a user accidentally visits a website infected with malware, causing the malware to be downloaded and installed on the computer without the user's knowledge.
With social engineering, bad guys lure users into downloading malicious files disguised as legitimate software. According to Kaspersky experts, attackers are becoming more and more sophisticated, disguising malicious code to bypass static analysis and simulation tools.
Although web threats have decreased, the number of users attacked by malware spread via removable storage devices such as USBs, CDs and DVDs (local threats) remains worrying. Kaspersky detected nearly 21.9 million local attacks in Vietnam in Q2 2024, down slightly from 30.9 million in the same period in 2023.
Protect yourself from cyber security threats
According to Kaspersky's recommendations, users should regularly back up important data to external sources or the cloud so that they can recover quickly in case of an attack, without having to pay a ransom.
Users should always update devices, software and applications to the latest versions to patch security vulnerabilities. Regularly update knowledge and skills to proactively respond to emerging threats.
