Corvette C8 ZR1X is the fastest American car, but still behind Porsche 911
Completing a lap in Germany in 6 minutes 49 seconds, becoming the fastest American car at the Nurburgring, the Corvette C8 ZR1X is still inferior to the Porsche 911.

Nordschleife with Corvette C8 ZR1X when completing a lap in Germany with an incredible time of 6 minutes 49 seconds. The amazing thing is not the lap time, but the man behind the wheel. Instead of professional racers who know Green Hell better than anyone, Chevrolet used its own engineers to prove it.
First, the Ford Mustang GTD's 6:52.072 lap record was achieved by driver Dirk Muller, a racer who knows every corner of the 'Ring' track like the back of his hand. Equipped with the ZTK performance package and road-legal Michelin Cup 2R tires, the ZR1 completed a lap time of 6:50.763 under the control of ZR1 vehicle dynamics engineer Brian Wallace. Wallace is no ordinary engineer, however, as GM notes he has logged an estimated 425 laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Vehicle performance director Aaron Link has 800 laps and counting, but then again, Link is not a professional racer.
Aaron Link needed 7:11.826 to lap the 13-mile track in a Z06 equipped with the Z07 performance package, which features a naturally aspirated flat-plane crank V8 that produces 670 horsepower. The ZR1 gets a little more power thanks to its ridiculously large turbochargers, giving it a mechanical output of 1,064 horsepower, according to GM. While it may be a little heavier than the rear-wheel-drive ZR1, the ZR1X is a thrilling hybrid with an electric drivetrain up front that delivers unrivaled confidence in every situation. Like the ZR1, the Nurburgring-spec ZR1X comes with 2R suspension at all corners and the ZTK Performance Package. The team’s driver, specifically ZR1X vehicle dynamics engineer Drew Cattell, has completed around 600 laps of the Nurburgring. All three drivers have been to the German track a total of 31 times to develop GM vehicles, including the aforementioned Corvette versions. The only changes made to these versions are in the safety equipment, starting with rollover protection and fully enclosed racing seats. The list continues with six-point seat belts and a fire extinguisher for added peace of mind.
Since the 1,250-horsepower ZR1 and ZR1X aren't available in Europe, and the Z06 pictured here is a U.S.-spec car, all three lap times are classified as prototype/pre-production. If the Detroit automaker were to field racers in these cars, faster lap times would be inevitable. The ZR1X is now very close to the Mercedes-AMG Black Series' 6:48.047. Likewise, the ZR1's 6:50 is very close to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS' 6:49.
