Dr. Nguyen Thanh Triet, pharmacist, Department of Traditional Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said that Vietnam has about 50 - 100 different species of poisonous mushrooms. Of these, the four most common types of poisonous mushrooms in Vietnam are white umbrella mushrooms, white cone-shaped poisonous mushrooms, gray-brown ribbed cap mushrooms, and white umbrella mushrooms with green gills.

Signs to identify poisonous mushrooms that people can note are that the mushroom has all the components such as cap, gill, stem, stem ring and base sheath. The inside of the mushroom stem is light pink, the red cap has white scales, and the mycelium glows at night, which is poisonous.

The poison can be in the whole mushroom (cap, gill, ring, stem, and base coat). The poison changes seasonally, during the growth of the mushroom, in the soil environment, and in the climate.

"People should not eat any type of mushroom without being sure about it. Be careful and look it up carefully to avoid confusion. If there are any signs of poisoning after eating mushrooms, they must immediately go to the nearest hospital or medical station for timely emergency treatment," Dr. Triet advised.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC), said that the rainy season is the time when mushrooms grow abundantly, creating favorable conditions for people to harvest mushrooms. However, if you do not have the knowledge to recognize poisonous mushrooms, the risk of poisoning is very high.

"For example, recently there has been a lot of information about nutritious chicken egg mushrooms, however, when people go to harvest wild mushrooms, they do not know exactly what kind of mushroom this is, they can mistake poisonous mushrooms for nutritious mushrooms," said Dr. Ngan.

Mushroom poisoning can occur immediately after eating or after 6-8 hours. When poisoning occurs, some people experience symptoms similar to digestive disorders and often self-monitor at home, leading to rapid progression.

Therefore, Dr. Ngan recommends that people should use mushrooms with clear origins, identified by experts, because poisonous mushrooms and nutritious mushrooms are easily confused.
