LDP President (Japan) wants to hold early elections, decides to dissolve the House of Representatives in October

Japan's new ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Shigeru Ishiba, who is certain to become the next prime minister , has decided to dissolve the country's lower house of parliament next October to hold an early election to seek a public mandate, sources familiar with the matter said on September 29.

In that case, the general election could be held as early as October 27, although it is also possible that it could take place on November 10, as Mr Ishiba is keen to debate in parliament with opposition parties before dissolving the House of Representatives, the sources said.

On the same day, the Yomiuri newspaper reported that Mr. Ishiba is likely to appoint former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani as Japan's Defense Minister.

According to NHK , Mr. Ishiba will announce his LDP personnel choices on September 30 and the cabinet composition one day later.

Some notable faces are said to include Mr. Moriyama Hiroshi as LDP Secretary General, Mr. Koizumi Shinjiro as Chairman of the LDP Election Strategy Committee.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa is expected to continue in this position in Mr. Ishiba's upcoming cabinet.

Mr. Shigeru Ishiba is known for his expertise in defense and security issues.

He was elected to the House of Representatives 12 times, and held important positions such as Minister of Defense, Minister of Agriculture , Minister of Regional Revitalization, and Secretary-General of the LDP.

Earlier, Mr. Ishiba said he planned to form a government on October 1, after winning the election on September 27 as LDP President.
