On August 27, DongA Ilbo reported that Seodaemun Police Department (Seoul, South Korea) prosecuted and arrested singer Psy on charges of violating the Korean Medical Services Act.

According to reports, Psy is suspected of receiving prescriptions for the psychotropic drugs “Xanax” and “Stilnox” at a general hospital in Seoul since 2022, without undergoing a direct medical examination. In response to this news, P Nation, Psy's management company, released a statement explaining the incident on August 28. In it, P Nation admitted to letting someone else pick up the medicine on Psy's behalf, but denied prescribing the wrong procedure.

Psy was diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and was taking sleeping pills as prescribed by his doctor. The use of sleeping pills was always under medical supervision, with the prescribed dosage, and there was absolutely no substitution. However, during the process, someone else went to get the medicine on his behalf, and the police are investigating. Once again, we apologize for causing concern to the public," the statement said.

For his part, Psy bowed his head and apologized to the media for letting someone else take the medicine instead. He said: "This was clearly a mistake and a negligent act."

The doctor who prescribed the drugs is also under investigation. He is said to have denied the allegations, claiming the treatment was carried out remotely.

Xanax is a medication used to treat anxiety disorders and relieve symptoms, while Stilnox is a prescription medication that is effective for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Both are psychotropic medications and require a doctor's diagnosis and prescription.

Under Korean law, psychotropic drugs can only be prescribed after direct consultation with a doctor, and patients are generally required to obtain the drugs themselves. Only in very limited circumstances, such as through immediate family members or caregivers, is it allowed to obtain the drugs on their behalf.
