In early September, the Guinness World Records Organization recognized a 10.9m-tall sunflower tree grown by Mr. Alex Babich as the tallest sunflower tree in the world.

Mr. Alex Babich, living in Indiana (USA), has 7 years of experience growing sunflowers. Previously, he set a record for growing the tallest sunflower in the US with 7.95m in 2023. As of 2024, he has a "collection" of 10 self-grown sunflowers, all taller than 6m.

Veteran German sunflower grower Burkhard Grendel gave Mr Babich the seeds, which came from a plant he grew in 2024 that grew to 8.58m tall – the second tallest sunflower in the world at the time.

As competitive flower growers often do, Mr. Babich regularly swaps seeds with fellow giant sunflower enthusiasts around the world.

Alex Babich was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. He started growing sunflowers as a way to show gratitude to his homeland.

He named the record-breaking sunflower "Clover".

Before this 10.9m sunflower, the old record belonged to a 9.17m tall tree grown by Mr. Hans-Peter Schiffer - German, confirmed on August 28, 2014.
