The bravery of the golden girls of Vietnamese Sepak Takraw
Unlike the men's team, the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team has affirmed its position in the continental and world sepak takraw village. Tran Thi Ngoc Yen and her teammates are the reigning ASIAD champions and also the Sepak Takraw World Cup champions in March 2025, so they are highly regarded despite facing rival Thailand in the final.

Despite the fans filling the stadium to cheer for the host team Thailand, Vietnamese players Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, Nguyen Thi Yen, Nguyen Thi My, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen still played with confidence and courage. The golden girls of Vietnamese sepak takraw fiercely pursued each point against their opponents but unfortunately lost 12-15 in the first half. The tenacity honed through many previous international tournaments helped Tran Thi Ngoc Yen and her teammates come back strongly in the second half. This was the half in which Ngoc Yen played the role of the main scorer for the Vietnamese women's team. In addition, she and her teammates also formed an excellent defense, blocking many attacks from their opponents, thereby winning with a score difference of 15-8, tying the score at 1-1. With high spirits, Tran Thi Ngoc Yen and her teammates played brilliantly in the decisive half. From being down 3-5, the Vietnamese women's team scored 6 consecutive points to lead 9-5 and then maintained their advantage and won 15-7. With an impressive comeback against host Thailand, the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team won the world championship in the 4-a-side event.
The success of the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team is partly due to the dedication of the coaching duo Tran Thi Vui and Hoang Thi Thai Xuan. Both were part of the first generation of Vietnamese sepak takraw players when we introduced this sport from Thailand nearly 30 years ago.
Men's team impression
The 2025 Sepak Takraw World Championship also witnessed the remarkable success of the Vietnamese men's Sepak Takraw team. The quartet Nguyen Hoang Lan, Nguyen Van Ly, Dau Van Hoang, and Vuong Minh Chau made history by defeating the Thai team for the first time to reach the final of the men's 4-man team event.
In the victory over Thailand in the semi-finals, the Vietnamese players all demonstrated their full potential. Nguyen Van Ly often shone with beautiful flying hooks to score points. Nguyen Hoang Lan played a leading role, especially effective in serving. It was a match that left both experts and fans in awe as the trio of Van Ly, Van Hoang, and Minh Chau formed a solid defensive wall that blocked many attacks from the world's number 1 team, Thailand.
In the final yesterday, the Vietnamese men's 4-man sepak takraw team lost 0-2 to the Japanese team, missing the chance to win the gold medal. That was a match in which Van Ly and his teammates were not in the best playing condition while the Japanese team played brilliantly. Although they could not win the world championship, with what they showed at the tournament, coach Hoang Duc Luong and his team are expected to create an explosion in international tournaments in the coming time. Vietnamese sepak takraw fans are eagerly awaiting the rematch between the Vietnamese team and Thailand at the 33rd SEA Games taking place in December 2025. The time from now until the 33rd SEA Games is enough for the Vietnamese men's sepak takraw players to hone their skills, tactics and mentality to hunt for the gold medal.
