Safety warning about children's toys containing button and coin batteries

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương18/09/2024

In compliance with its transparency obligations under the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), on August 14, 2024, the United States sent notification code G/TBT/N/USA/2137 to WTO member countries on Safety Standards for Children's Toys Containing Button Cell or Coin Cell Batteries.

Of particular concern is the need to prevent children from coming into contact with and swallowing toy batteries that fall out, and the draft adds performance requirements and warning labeling for battery-operated children's toys containing button or coin cell batteries.

At the same time, the draft also proposes to add testing requirements for fixing screws, minimum requirements for screw-type screws, sequential use and enhanced testing (reduced battery replacement pressure, impact, crushing, tension, compression and conformity verification testing).

In addition, the Vietnam TBT Office requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to provide information to Vietnamese enterprises producing and exporting related products to the United States.

For businesses, the TBT Office recommends that the Business Association and VCCI update information to prepare well and meet the requirements of the regulations when exporting to the US market. At the same time, respond to information from businesses about difficulties in meeting the regulations when exporting the above products to the US to the Vietnam TBT Office, if any.

For the Standards Board and the Quality Management & Conformity Assessment Board - National Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality, the TBT Office recommends studying the draft US standard to propose appropriate policies.
