This is important information to help schools assess the quality of teaching; from there, they can find solutions to organize teaching, testing, and evaluation that are close to output standards, ensuring fairness and developing students' real abilities.

What do you see from the correlation between test scores and academic records?

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang Huong - Tran Quang Khai High School (Trieu Viet Vuong, Hung Yen), from the correlation between exam scores and report card scores announced by the Ministry of Education and Training , it can be seen that in all 12 subjects, the average basic report card score is higher than the high school graduation exam score. This is understandable, because the report card score is the result of the entire evaluation process. With the spirit of student progress, in regular evaluation, students have the opportunity to improve their scores based on their efforts and efforts to improve.

The purpose of assessment is to determine the level of completion of training and learning tasks of students according to the requirements to be achieved in the general education program; to provide accurate and timely information for students to adjust their training and learning activities, and for educational managers and teachers to adjust their teaching and learning activities.

From the school's exam score data, Mr. Nguyen Minh Dao - Principal of Lam Kinh High School (Lam Son, Thanh Hoa) informed: Overall, high school graduation exam scores tend to be lower than the average subject scores in the transcript, especially in subjects such as Literature, History and Math.

Compared to 2024, the difference between the transcript scores and exam scores this year has changed positively, the gap is narrower in some subjects, thanks to the school's focus on process assessment and increased testing in a similar format to the graduation exam.

However, some students of the school have high academic scores (over 8.0), but their high school graduation exam results are only fair or average. This reflects that the school's assessment during the learning process is not close to the output standards of the national exam, or that students are not well prepared in standardized test-taking skills.

Mr. Tran Huy Hoang - Principal of Dien Bien District High School (Thanh An, Dien Bien) said: The correlation between exam scores and average scores of subjects in high school in 2025 is still maintained at an average - good level (coefficient from about 0.45 to 0.68) depending on the subject.

At Dien Bien District High School, there is a phenomenon of some students having high average subject scores but low test scores, especially in subjects requiring synthetic thinking or application skills (Math, Physics, Chemistry). This reflects the reality that the assessment in schools is not yet close to the output standards and the quality of teaching and assessment in schools needs to be seriously considered.

Important lessons

Comparing test scores and report cards helps schools draw lessons and orient improvements to improve the quality of education. According to Mr. Tran Huy Hoang, Dien Bien District High School will focus on improving the quality of assessment of the learning process at school by building a matrix of periodic tests that are close to the graduation exam standards, ensuring differentiation and reliability; increasing cross-checking and exchanging test questions between classes and teachers; organizing professional training for teachers on capacity assessment and building application and high-level application questions.

Thematic testing activities on student assessment will be enhanced; at the same time, school-wide surveys will be organized twice a year to cross-evaluate and review the quality of test creation and grading.

From the information on scores announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, Mr. Ha Van Tri - Vice Principal of Phu Bai High School (Huong Thuy, Hue City) said that in order to improve the quality of education in schools to meet the requirements of innovation, it is necessary to first organize teaching, testing and evaluation to meet the requirements set out in the program.

Along with that, strengthen teaching and learning associated with practical issues. Further improve the effectiveness of applying information technology and digital transformation in teaching, testing and evaluation. It is possible to coordinate with the whole industry or inter-schools to organize common tests and exams to take advantage of resources of questions and professional content between units.

Comparing the correlation between exam scores and academic records, Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang Huong also said that Tran Quang Khai High School has drawn some important lessons to contribute to improving the quality of education in the coming years.

First: Strengthen teaching towards capacity development. The 2018 General Education Program emphasizes on assessing students' capacity and qualities. Therefore, in addition to fostering knowledge and skills, teachers need to have teaching methods to develop critical thinking, problem solving, and practical application skills, in line with the orientation of the high school graduation exam.

Second: Encourage students to strive for comprehensive learning. Using the average score of all three years of study in graduation evaluation encourages students to study regularly and comprehensively from the beginning of high school. The Board of Directors develops and organizes regular and periodic assessments to monitor students' learning progress, and has timely measures to support weak students to improve and enhance their results. The report card score accounts for 50%, so teachers need to focus on assessing the learning process fairly and objectively; ensuring the quality of testing and assessment, so that the report card score accurately reflects the students' abilities.

Third: Teachers and schools support, advise, and orient careers early so that students can choose high school graduation exam subjects that match their strengths and university admission goals, thereby optimizing their scores.

Fourth: Strengthen the application of information technology and digital transformation in teaching and learning. With the roadmap to switch to computer-based testing in the coming time, schools need to prepare facilities, train teachers, and guide students to get acquainted with new types of computer-based tests. Applying information technology in teaching, using learning software, online tests, etc. will help students gradually adapt to new forms of testing.

Fifth: Focus on training subjects with high differentiation. The 2025 score distribution shows that Math and English are highly differentiated, with the number of 10 points increasing but the average score tends to decrease. The school invests in training, improves the quality of teaching and learning, thoroughly innovates methods, closely follows reality, differentiates students, builds a question bank with high applicability, helping students improve their problem-solving ability when encountering real-life situations.

Exam score data, the correlation between the 2025 high school graduation exam scores and the transcript scores, shows a shift towards a more comprehensive student assessment; more fairness in graduation consideration, while still maintaining the high differentiation of the exam to serve university admissions. From there, high schools promptly adjust teaching methods towards developing capacity, encouraging students to study, improving quality, and preparing increasingly better facilities to serve teaching and learning. - Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang Huong
