On the afternoon of August 2, after inspecting Long Thanh airport for the eighth time, the Prime Minister directed that when Long Thanh airport comes into operation, connecting traffic must be smooth. The Prime Minister also requested the Ministry of Construction to urgently review traffic projects.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is urgently researching the construction of a railway connecting Tan Son Nhat airport with Long Thanh airport.

According to the plan, the connection between Tan Son Nhat airport and Long Thanh will be through three railway lines, including metro line 2, metro line 6 and Long Thanh - Thu Thiem railway. The specific route is metro line 2 connecting Tan Son Nhat airport, then connecting Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway at Thu Thiem station.

Metro line 6, after passing through Tan Son Nhat airport, will connect directly with Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line at Phu Huu intersection.

In fact, all three projects are being studied separately. Of these, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway project, approximately 42km long, with a total investment of 3.5 billion USD, is being studied by the Ministry of Construction and is completing its pre-feasibility study report.

The project will assign Ho Chi Minh City as the managing agency to ensure consistency in the construction, operation and exploitation of the railway connecting Long Thanh airport and Tan Son Nhat airport.

Metro line 6 and metro line 2 are two of the seven lines being invested in by Ho Chi Minh City under special mechanisms and policies approved by the National Assembly in Resolution 188 in February 2025.

The final report on planning routes and railways in the Ho Chi Minh City hub area, chaired by the Vietnam Railway Authority, also clearly stated the direction of connecting railways and urban railways between the two airports.
