German scientists have found a treatment that can prevent common signs of aging like wrinkles and gray hair from starting, which could revolutionize anti-aging treatments, according to science site ScitechDaily.

Certain hormones have "surprising and unexpected" effects on skin and hair, opening up potential new treatment avenues, researchers say.

To better understand the role of hormones in controlling skin aging, scientists from the University of Munster (Germany) studied hormones that they believe are "key" in controlling skin aging, including insulin-like growth factor 1, estrogen, retinoids and melatonin.

In particular, melatonin, a natural hormone that helps regulate sleep, has shown particular promise.

Melatonin is particularly interesting as a potential anti-aging agent because it is a well-tolerated small molecule that is an antioxidant, as well as a regulator of mitochondrial metabolism.

It turns out that in addition to helping you sleep, melatonin may also have important anti-aging properties.

It turns out that in addition to helping you sleep, this hormone may also have important anti-aging properties. Because when melatonin enters the bloodstream, its antioxidant effects help protect cells from damage, essentially fighting the aging process, according to ScitechDaily.

In addition, some of the hormones studied - including the one responsible for pigmentation - have surprising and unexpected biological effects on skin function and hair aging.

Our study highlights key hormonal factors that regulate skin aging pathways such as connective tissue degradation (leading to wrinkles), stem cell survival and depigmentation (leading to grey hair), said lead author Professor Markus Bohm, PhD, Head of the Department of General Dermatology, University Hospital Munster.

Some of the hormones we study have anti-aging properties. Further research on these hormones may provide opportunities to develop new therapies to treat and prevent aging skin and gray hair.
