The Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) continue their operation to encircle the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd area in the western part of Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. The Russian Aerospace Forces are actively supporting the ground forces in this operation. Video footage shows an assembly point of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in Mirnograd being attacked with FAB-3000 guided glide bombs. The images show a bomb dropped from a Su-34 fighter jet, flying towards the assembly points of the 14th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, deployed in residential areas of Mirnohrad. After a powerful explosion, almost nothing remained at the Brigade's assembly point.
Ukrainian soldiers at the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad front said that this is how the Russian Air Force opens the way for the infantry to attack by using firepower tactics to “soften the battlefield”. As soon as Russian reconnaissance identifies an enemy stronghold, their Air Force will immediately attack it. Such tactics, as Ukrainian soldiers have noted, make their UAV units virtually inoperable. In contrast, Russian FPV UAV teams have enough space to maneuver, pinpoint enemy positions, firepower, and positions that have survived airstrikes, and then either continue their “sniper” attacks or point artillery fire into the area. After the AFU position was “softened”, the RFAF infantry units began their offensive operations, supported by armored vehicles. It is worth noting that the Ukrainian army in Pokrovsk is currently in an extremely difficult situation, as the Russian army, which is heavily concentrated in the area, continues to tighten the siege. To prevent the Pokrovsk front from being surrounded, the AFU General Staff has directed all available reserves towards this front. The Telegram channel Legitimny reported that the Kiev leadership demanded that the formation of a "cauldron" in Pokrovsk be prevented at all costs.
In response to the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) deep thrust northeast of Pokrovsk, the AFU General Staff had to urgently transfer all the remaining reserves to the area. Meanwhile, the RFAF continued to intensify offensive operations on the flanks of the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd stronghold cluster, as well as in Konstantinovka. To cope with the battlefield situation that was developing in an unfavorable direction for Kiev, the AFU actively purchased modern weapons and equipment from the West, applied many new tactics, and counterattacks organized in many locations were beginning to be effective. The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that Ukraine has recently purchased new equipment, including communications systems. This equipment is capable of countering Russian electronic jamming systems, ensuring timely and effective communication for Ukrainian UAVs and other equipment on the battlefield. With the use of this new equipment, the AFU's battlefield communications capabilities have been significantly enhanced, creating a foundation for counterattacks. The Daily Telegraph also reported on August 17 that a Ukrainian sniper had taken out two Russian soldiers from a distance of 2.5 miles (about 4,000 meters), setting a new world record for the longest sniper kill. Sniper shooting at such a distance requires modern equipment, as evidenced by new equipment supplied to Ukraine by the United States and other Western countries.
Also on August 17, General Syrsky mobilized nine elite brigade-level units to launch a counterattack to stop the Russian breakthrough north of Pokrovsk. Notably, this counterattack, in addition to fire support from FPV UAVs, also included combat robots. The Deep State channel, which is affiliated with the Main Directorate of Military Intelligence of Ukraine (GRU), said that with the help of new communications equipment, Ukraine detected the car of Lieutenant General Esedulla Abachev, Deputy Commander of the Northern Group of the RFAF in charge of the Sumy front, and then launched an attack with an FPV UAV. According to Deep State, the AFU FPV UAV successfully hit Lieutenant General Abachev's vehicle, seriously injuring the RFAF Deputy Front Commander and he was urgently taken to the rear for treatment.
In addition to new communications equipment, the AFU has begun large-scale deployment of fiber-optic-guided UAVs, which are completely immune to interference from the Russian Krasukha-4S electronic warfare system. A Ukrainian company called Fold is also developing a new fiber-optic-guided UAV with a range of 100 km.
