A 15-year-old patient was admitted to Vinmec Can Tho International General Hospital with increasing abdominal pain, no fever but poor appetite. Accompanied by anemia and pain localized in the left lower abdomen, suspected ovarian torsion.

Through paraclinical examinations such as ultrasound, blood tests, and CT scans, the doctor discovered a "giant" cyst occupying almost the entire abdomen, measuring up to 25cm - equivalent to a 7-month pregnancy.

This is a highly complicated case because the patient is very young, has a high BMI, and is at risk of ovarian torsion and necrosis, which seriously threatens fertility.

The giant tumor has the size of a 7-month fetus.

Immediately after an interdisciplinary consultation and explaining the situation to the family, the Vinmec medical team performed emergency surgery in a one-way sterile operating room with a full modern anesthesia and resuscitation system.

For more than an hour, a multidisciplinary team of obstetricians, gynecologists, anesthesiologists, and emergency resuscitation specialists carefully worked together to remove the tumor, effectively control bleeding, and preserve healthy tissue to preserve ovarian function. The surgery was safe and without complications. The patient recovered quickly, ate normally, and was discharged after only 4 days.

Specialist II Doctor Uong Thi Kim Ngoc - obstetrician and gynecologist at Vinmec Can Tho emphasized that with ovarian diseases in adolescents, early diagnosis and proper intervention are key factors. Doctors not only treat the physical condition, but also have to think about the child's future psychology, fertility and comprehensive development.

In fact, many young people often ignore abnormal signs in the lower abdomen due to fear, or mistake them for menstrual cramps. However, obstetricians and gynecologists warn that if not detected and treated early, the tumor can grow large and compress nearby organs or twist and rupture - seriously affecting health and reproductive function.

Previously, complicated cases like the 15-year-old patient often had to be transferred to large medical facilities in Ho Chi Minh City. Now, Vinmec Can Tho's successful handling of difficult cases right in the locality is a clear demonstration of its specialized treatment capacity, helping people in the West to access high-quality healthcare while reducing the burden of costs and travel time.
