Hai Phong Eye Hospital continues to successfully perform 4 corneal transplant surgeries

The success of 8 corneal transplants at Hai Phong Eye Hospital in 3 consecutive years has contributed to spreading the noble humanitarian value of the importance of cornea donation.

After the success of 4 corneal transplants in 2023 and 2024, on August 23, Hai Phong Eye Hospital continued to successfully perform 4 corneal transplant surgeries in 2025.

Director of the Department of Health Le Minh Quang emphasized the significance of corneal transplants at Hai Phong Eye Hospital.

The 4 patients who received corneal transplants in 2025 were all from Hai Phong, the youngest was 16 years old and the oldest was 65 years old.

Previously, 4 patients were examined by specialists, consulted, performed screening tests and prepared with complete legal documents and medical records.

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Xuan Cung, Head of Cornea Department (Central Eye Hospital) exchanged information about cooperation with Hai Phong Eye Hospital in corneal transplant surgery.

Regarding the source of corneas, Hai Phong Eye Hospital received them from the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation and the Central Eye Bank. The quality of the donor corneas is good, creating favorable conditions for the professional operation of the transplant.

Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Duc Quan, Director of Hai Phong Eye Hospital, expressed his gratitude to the leaders of the Department of Health, the Central Eye Hospital, the Central Eye Bank and the anesthesia team of Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital.

At exactly 8:00 a.m. on August 23, with the support of the anesthesia team (Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital), the surgical team consisting of experts from the Central Eye Hospital and Hai Phong Eye Hospital led by Associate Professor, Dr. Le Xuan Cung, Head of the Cornea Department (Central Eye Hospital) performed the first corneal transplant surgery for patient NKC (born in 2009). This was followed by the remaining 3 cases.

The surgical team, including experts from the Central Eye Hospital and Hai Phong Eye Hospital, performed corneal transplant surgery for the patient.

After nearly 4 hours of surgery, the 4 corneal transplants were initially assessed by experts as successful. The patients were safely released from anesthesia and transferred to the post-operative room for monitoring and special care, strictly following infection control, resuscitation and post-transplant treatment procedures.

In 2023 and 2024, Hai Phong Eye Hospital safely performed 4 corneal transplants. With 4 corneal transplants in 2025, the hospital continues to make a prominent mark on the corneal transplant map of Vietnam.

Hai Phong Eye Hospital is the city's final specialized hospital, where leading experts in ophthalmology gather. In the first 6 months of 2025, the hospital examined and treated nearly 35,000 patients, of which nearly 6,500 cases were operated on.

In the coming time, Hai Phong Eye Hospital will continue to improve the quality of eye health care in the community. This is also an important goal in the Project to develop Hai Phong Eye Hospital into a Grade 1 city-level hospital in 2025, contributing to the successful implementation of Resolution 07 of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee on building and developing Hai Phong city to become a medical center of the Northern coastal region.
