Specialist Doctor I Tran The Thang, Director of Operations of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital, said: After nearly a year of implementation, the volunteer programs have brought about clear results. Thousands of people, mainly the elderly and those in difficult circumstances, have been examined and early detected eye diseases. Many cases, thanks to timely diagnosis, have been treated and operated, bringing light and joy to life.
Dr. Thang added: According to statistics from community examinations, more than 90% of elderly patients have cataracts, which is the leading cause of blindness if not operated on promptly. This is a common disease due to the natural aging process of the eye, causing the lens to become opaque, significantly reducing vision.
In addition, many people also suffer from diseases such as: pterygium, entropion, blepharitis, watery eyes or ocular surface diseases. Although these diseases do not cause blindness quickly, they reduce the quality of life, cause discomfort, pain and limit daily activities.
Notably, during the examinations, the hospital also recorded an increase in refractive errors in school children due to excessive use of electronic devices and high study intensity.
Faced with this reality, Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital has built the Bright Eyes for School Program, coordinating with schools to organize periodic eye examinations, early detection of refractive errors and support giving glasses to students in difficult circumstances.
The charitable activities of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital not only help people, especially those in remote areas, people with difficult circumstances, access high-quality medical services, but also demonstrate the social responsibility and humanitarian spirit of the medical sector. Each successful surgery, each pair of eyes restored, is an additional joy and happiness spreading to the community.
“In the coming time, the hospital will continue to work with the government and social organizations to expand more free medical examination and treatment programs. Thereby, contributing to the goal of a healthy, compassionate and sustainable community,” shared Dr. Tran The Thang.
