North Korea previously informed Japan of its planned launch between November 22 and December 1. This is North Korea's third military spy satellite launch this year. The previous two attempts in May and August both failed.

Following the announcement, Japan and South Korea immediately issued warnings to ships about the potential launch, urging North Korea to cancel the plan as it would violate a UN Security Council resolution banning Pyongyang from launching systems using ballistic missile technology. North Korea has not responded, but has previously said that developing its space program and defense activities are its sovereign right.

The Japanese government has ordered its air defense forces to be ready to destroy any missile that falls into its territory. Meanwhile, the South Korean military has threatened to take "necessary measures" if North Korea carries out its plan. Yonhap reported that representatives of South Korea, the US and Japan held a nuclear phone call yesterday to discuss how to coordinate their response if North Korea launches a satellite.

On the same day, the US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson arrived at the military port in Busan, southern South Korea, in a move to show off military power.
