Apple shifts production line: iPhones in the US now mostly come from India, MacBooks are made in Vietnam

Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the majority of iPhones sold in the US in the second quarter came from India, despite recent criticism from US President Donald Trump about the shift in production. Speaking after the financial report on July 31, Mr. Cook said that India has now become the main manufacturing hub for the US market, while China focuses on other markets.

In addition to the iPhone, products such as MacBooks, iPads and Apple Watches for US users are now mostly manufactured in Vietnam, while the majority of goods destined for international markets still come from China.

President Trump opposes, imposes tariffs on Indian goods

Trump has previously been outspoken against Apple manufacturing iPhones in India for sale to American consumers. During a visit to Doha in May, he said he had expressed his displeasure directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook and recently imposed a 25% tariff on imports from India. However, electronic devices such as smartphones and computers are temporarily exempted from the tariff list.

Besides its role as a manufacturing hub, India is also becoming a potential consumer market for Apple. According to Mr. Tim Cook, iPhone sales here are growing at a record pace.

Apple recorded double-digit growth in emerging markets such as India, the Middle East, South Asia and Brazil in the second quarter. In India alone, Apple was among the top 20 countries with the highest revenue in the quarter ending in June.

Apple is also expanding its presence in India with plans to expand its retail network. Globally, its second-quarter revenue reached $94 billion, up 10% from the same period last year.

Impact of tariffs

Regarding the impact of tax policies, Mr. Tim Cook said that Apple had incurred about 800 million USD in tax-related costs in the last quarter. This cost is expected to increase to 1.1 billion USD in the next quarter if the current tax rates do not change. However, this number can still fluctuate depending on policy developments in the future.
