For the first time since 2010, Samsung lost its "throne" to Apple |
In a recent report by market analysis firm International Data Corporation (IDC), more than 1.1 billion smartphones were sold in 2023, down 3.2% from the 1.2 billion devices sold in the mobile market in 2022.
In 2023, Apple sold 234.6 million smartphones, up 3.7% from 2022 and accounting for 20.1% of the global market share. Notably, Apple surpassed Samsung to become the world's largest smartphone maker, with a difference of about 8 million units.
Samsung was pushed down to second place, with 226.6 million smartphones sold in 2023, down 13.6% compared to 2022 and accounting for 19.4% of the global market share. Notably, Samsung is the smartphone company with the sharpest decline in sales over the past year.
Two Chinese smartphone brands, Xiaomi and Oppo, ranked third and fourth respectively. In 2023, Xiaomi sold 145.9 million units, accounting for 12.5% of the global market share and down 4.7% from 2022 sales. Meanwhile, Oppo sold 103.1 million units, accounting for 8.8% of the global market share and down 9.9% from 2022 sales.
Overview of the smartphone market in 2023 |
Coming in at number 5 is another little-known Chinese smartphone company, Transsion, a mobile phone company founded in Hong Kong (China), but headquartered in Shenzhen.
In 2023, Transsion grew rapidly and had sales growth of up to 30.8% compared to 2022, becoming the smartphone company with the strongest sales growth. This Chinese phone company sold 94.9 million products and accounted for 8.1% of the global market share last year.
In 2023, Transsion's appearance in the top 5 largest smartphone manufacturers in the world is considered a surprise, but it is unclear whether this Chinese smartphone company will stay in the top 5 for long and continue to rise to higher positions in the future.
IDC also predicts that the emergence of new generation foldable screen smartphones as well as smartphones with integrated artificial intelligence (AI) features will help the smartphone market recover in 2024.
