On June 22, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, met with Linus Torvalds, the Finnish programmer also known as the “father” of Linux. This was the first time the two appeared in public together, at a dinner that was said to be intimate and hosted by Mark Russinovich, the Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Azure.

A photo posted on LinkedIn of Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds and David Cutler, a veteran Microsoft engineer, has attracted attention. Mark Russinovich did not give a specific reason for this meeting, but the photo he posted on LinkedIn has attracted much attention in the technology community.

Gates and Torvalds have been in the tech industry for more than 50 years, but have never been seen together in public. Interestingly, these two tech giants seem to come from two completely different worlds .

The founder of Microsoft is known for “commoditizing” software, the core of the business. Gates focuses on making money through a licensing model and controlling the ecosystem to maximize profits, with an approach that promotes a closed-source software environment.

Torvalds, meanwhile, is a pioneer in the open source environment, bringing Linux to programmers around the world to develop together. He advocates software freedom, puts developers first, and places a strong emphasis on collaboration.

Torvalds has often satirized the way Microsoft operates, as well as joked about Windows software errors. “Microsoft is not evil. They simply make bad operating systems. PCs are like air conditioners, open the window (Windows) and everything breaks,” he once said.

Wccftech believes that perhaps the difference in ideology is the main reason why the two have never met before. However, other than that, there has never been any other hostility between them.

Many are curious about what was discussed during the conversation. According to Mark Russinovich, the meeting did not involve any major decisions about the operating system kernel.

“Linus never met Bill, and Dave (David) never met Linus. No major kernel decisions were made here, but maybe at the next dinner,” he wrote.
