Andre Onana agrees to leave Man Utd after being offered a double salary

(Dan Tri) - Andre Onana has reached an agreement to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has had his salary nearly doubled at the Turkish team.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has agreed to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan. Notably, the Turkish club will pay Onana's entire salary at Man Utd, as well as provide him with bonuses, which will almost double his current salary.

Onana is expected to fly to Türkiye after completing international duty with Cameroon, whose side have a crucial World Cup qualifier in Cape Verde on the evening of September 9 (local time).

Although Trabzonspor is not a traditional force on the Turkish football map like Galatasaray, Fenerbahce or Besiktas, they are currently second in the Super Lig standings with three wins and one draw after four rounds.

According to The Athletic, Man Utd and Trabzonspor have been in talks over the loan deal since last weekend. The loan deal will not include a transfer fee or a buyout clause. The Turkish transfer window closes on September 12, and Trabzonspor want Onana available for their next game against Fenerbahce on September 14.

Onana previously played the full match in Cameroon's 3-0 win over Eswatini on September 4.

The reason Man Utd "gave the green light" for Onana to leave

Initially, Man Utd had no intention of signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. However, things changed when Onana returned to pre-season training. He suffered a hamstring problem on the first day, and then a full injury on the second. This led to questions being raised about Onana's fitness after the summer, when he immediately started having problems.

For manager Ruben Amorim, the incident left a lasting impression, leading to Altay Bayindir being selected as a starter for the first three Premier League games. Onana was even left out of the squad for the game against Arsenal, despite feeling fit enough to play, with Tom Heaton named on the bench. Onana was surprised to be left out of the squad for the game against Fulham.

Looking back, it all started at the end of last season, when Bayindir started the final Premier League game against Aston Villa, with Heaton on the bench and Onana dropped after a disappointing performance in the Europa League final.

Onana returned to Carrington demanding a new contract and a pay rise, a stance he has held since taking a standard 25% pay cut following their failure to qualify for the Champions League, a stance not shared by Amorim. However, United have made no move to sell the Cameroonian. Monaco were the only club to show a genuine interest, but they were told he would cost at least £30m. Monaco refused to go any further.

After the Fulham game, Onana's representatives again checked to see if Man Utd wanted them to explore options but they were told no and the player remained in Amorim's plans.

However, at that time, after Bayindir's unimpressive performance against Arsenal, Man Utd decided to recruit Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. Although Lammens was expected to compete for the No. 1 position, Onana was said to be confident of regaining his starting position.

However, further talks between United and Onana's representatives after Lammens's arrival made it clear that he was willing to look for options that would guarantee him more playing time. He was also told that United would be happy to keep him, but when Trabzonspor made an offer, Onana gave it serious consideration.
