The ATP World No. 2 defeated Hamad Medjedovic 6-4, 6-4 in a challenging match at the ATP Masters 1000 event. In the intense heat of Ohio (USA), Alcaraz kept his cool, winning his 50th match of 2025 and his 13th consecutive victory at Masters 1000 tournaments.

“I know he is a really strong player. Medjedovic's shots are extremely difficult to block and he also has a strong serve. I know he doesn't like to run too much from side to side, so my plan was to let him run as much as possible," Alcaraz said after the match.

“It was difficult because Medjedovic's ball was very fast, but I'm happy because I did it most of the time, trying to defend as best I could. I'm really happy to have won,” added the Spaniard.

Both Alcaraz and Medjedovic are former Next Gen ATP Finals champions. The first match between the two players was tense from the very beginning. However, the game swung heavily in the Spaniard's favor when Medjedovic served for 3-3. The Serb saved three break points, but the pressure was on in the fourth set, when he double-faulted, giving his opponent a chance to break through.

Medjedovic had to seek physiotherapy treatment for a sore neck late in the first set. He played aggressively in the second set to try and shorten his serve in the heat. Although he managed to break back to level at 3-3, that approach proved too inconsistent to overcome the Spaniard. The Serb hit two consecutive drop shots, allowing Alcaraz to break again for a 4-3 lead. This time, the Spaniard did not let the advantage slip away and sealed the victory in 95 minutes.

Having already claimed titles in Monte Carlo and Rome as part of his current Masters 1000 winning streak, Alcaraz will face Luca Nardi in Cincinnati, where he is chasing an eighth title at the level. Nardi led 16th seed Jakub Mensik 6-2, 2-1 when the Czech retired in the fourth round.

Both Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz have qualified for the ATP Finals, and will be locked in a fierce battle for the year's number one title over the remaining months. Alcaraz currently leads Sinner by 1,500 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

Elsewhere, ninth seed Andrey Rublev remained in the tournament after a three-and-a-half-hour, sweltering match against 21st seed Alexei Popyrin in the glare of Cincinnati. Rublev won 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5 to level the series at 2-2 with Popyrin.
