The Ministry of National Education, now the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), was established in the early days of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Since then, there have been 13 ministers assigned to lead the education and training sector, but only one minister is a woman. That is Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh.

Joining the revolution in August 1945, she was active in the movement to seize power in Saigon, supplying weapons to the war zone, holding many positions in the Women's National Salvation Association and the Lien-Viet Front. During the period 1951-1954, she was imprisoned in Chi Hoa prison, then continued to participate in the peace movement demanding the implementation of the Geneva Agreement.

From 1955 to 1968, she worked at the Central Women's Union, holding the position of Head of the Welfare Department, then Central Committee member in charge of foreign affairs of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam.

During the period 1969-1976, she was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam, Head of the negotiating delegation at the Paris Conference. After unification, she became the Minister of Education (1976-1987), then Deputy Head of the Central Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairwoman of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee (1987-1992).

From 1992-2002, she was Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. She retired in September 2002.

Professor Vu Dinh Hoe (1912-2011) was a lawyer, journalist and the first Minister of National Education, now the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam. He was the 5th generation grandson of Mr. Vu Tong Phan.

Mr. Vu Dinh Hoe graduated from the 2nd Law Faculty of Indochina University, then chose to teach at the famous private schools Thang Long and Gia Long, and joined a group of progressive intellectuals to establish Thanh Nghi , one of the famous newspapers of that time.

He joined the French Socialist Party branch of Jaurès and was one of the founding members of the Vietnamese Democratic Party. When the New Vietnam Association was founded in 1945, he served as Secretary General. He also served as Vice President of the National Language Propagation Association (founded in 1938).

Professor Vu Dinh Hoe was a member of the first National Assembly. He served as Minister of National Education from August 1945 to March 1946 and then as Minister of Justice for the next 15 years. As Minister of National Education, he signed the decree on the establishment of the Faculty of Arts - the direct predecessor of Hanoi University of Science.
