Excellent comeback to defeat Philippines, U23 Vietnam wins the right to enter the final
The decision to apply VAR was made by AFF to support the referee team in sensitive situations, such as checking the validity of goals or controversial fouls.
This move is considered necessary, as there have been many mistakes in this tournament. A typical example was in the semi-final match between U23 Vietnam and U23 Philippines on the evening of July 25, when Malaysian referee Muhammad Usaid Jamal made a serious mistake.
In the 90+5 minute, center-back Noah Leddel (Philippines) fouled striker Quoc Viet in a dangerous situation, but the referee sent off Jaime Rosquillo - who was not involved in the incident. Because the tournament did not use VAR in the semi-finals, this wrong decision could not be corrected, raising controversy about fairness.

That is why the AFF's decision to apply VAR in the final match received the support of the U23 Indonesia and U23 Vietnam teams as well as a large number of fans.
"VAR applied in the final is good for both teams. Players will not dare to risk elbowing and rough kicking anymore. Referees will also not make mistakes with situations that are difficult to observe with the naked eye," said Roy Key.
"I hope both teams play fair in the final. Using VAR is a reasonable decision," Ricard Delon emphasized.
The final match between host U23 Indonesia and U23 Vietnam will take place at Bung Karno Stadium at 8:00 p.m. on July 29.
Vietnam U23 is the most successful team in the Southeast Asian U23 Championship with two championships. Meanwhile, Indonesia only won one championship in 2019.
